We are looking for a motivated, organised and detail-oriented Technical Clerk to join our Signalling Design Team in Gateshead.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong IT skills and an interest in building a long-term career in railway engineering. Previous railway signalling experience is not essential, as full on-the-job training and support will be provided.
Initially, you will provide administrative and document-control support to signalling designers, ensuring safety-critical documentation is processed, controlled and distributed accurately. As your experience develops, you will have opportunities to learn signalling design software and progress towards a Signalling Design Assistant role.
Key Responsibilities
Design Administration and Document Control
-
Print, scan, file and manage signalling design documentation and project records.
-
Process safety-critical paperwork accurately and follow document-control procedures.
-
Maintain document-control systems, design records and issue registers.
-
Ensure design information is correctly stored, identifiable and readily accessible.
Planning and Coordination
-
Liaise with railway delivery teams regarding work programmes, requirements and design delivery dates.
-
Review weekly work plans to identify upcoming design requirements and changes to existing programmes.
-
Communicate changes in priorities, availability and delivery dates to the relevant designers or team leaders.
-
Support the team in coordinating workloads and meeting project deadlines.
Technical Development and Career Progression
With training and mentoring, you will have the opportunity to develop your technical skills and work towards a Signalling Design Assistant position. Development opportunities may include:
-
Training in MicroStation CONNECT design software.
-
Assisting with the production and amendment of signalling drawings.
-
Learning railway signalling principles, terminology and design processes.
-
Developing knowledge of electrical principles and engineering design.
Working Arrangements
The role is based at Team Valley, Gateshead, NE11. Regular office attendance is mandatory, and there is currently no home-working arrangement. Travel to other work locations may be required as part of the role.
Essential Skills and Experience
-
Excellent attention to detail, particularly when handling safety-critical documentation.
-
A responsible, patient and methodical approach, with the ability to take ownership of tasks.
-
Strong computer literacy and the ability to learn new software and systems.
-
Good organisational and communication skills.
-
The ability to work independently and contribute positively within a team.
-
A genuine willingness to learn about railway signalling, electrical principles and engineering design.
-
A full UK driving licence, or a firm commitment to obtaining one within six months.
-
The ability to meet relevant occupational health and fitness requirements, including colour-vision requirements where applicable.
Desirable Skills and Experience
-
A background in administration, document control, engineering, electrical work, IT or technical support.
-
Experience managing controlled documents, project records or technical information.
-
Familiarity with CAD software or other design packages.
-
Knowledge of basic electrical or electronic principles.
-
Previous railway experience or experience gained through a technical apprenticeship.
Who This Role May Suit
This opportunity would suit someone looking to develop a career in railway engineering, whether coming from an administrative, technical, engineering, CAD, IT or electrical background. Candidates completing or having completed a technical apprenticeship are also encouraged to apply.
The right attitude, accuracy, personal responsibility and willingness to learn are more important than previous signalling experience.
Why Apply?
Join a specialist railway signalling team and gain valuable technical experience through practical training and mentoring. This role offers an opportunity to develop new skills and build a long-term career, with potential progression into signalling design support.
If you are organised, detail-oriented and keen to learn, we would welcome your application
