Business Development Executive
Shrewsbury | Office-based | £25,000-£35,000 basic + commission + annual bonus | OTE up to £50,000
The opportunity
Our client is a growing UK technology business developing innovative AI and customer engagement solutions for organisations across a range of sectors.
The company is entering an exciting period of commercial growth and is now looking for a Business Development Executive to join its expanding sales operation.
This is a genuinely proactive new-business role. You will be responsible for identifying and engaging prospective customers, creating new sales opportunities and booking qualified meetings for the wider commercial team.
You'll work closely with senior commercial leadership in a small, ambitious team, giving you the opportunity to make a visible contribution rather than simply becoming another number in a large sales organisation.
The role
This is a phone-led outbound business development position suited to someone who enjoys opening doors, speaking to decision-makers and turning prospects into genuine commercial opportunities.
You won't be handed an entirely cold list and left to figure it out yourself. The business has already invested in building a researched database of target organisations, prioritised accounts and identified decision-makers.
Your job will be to turn that research into conversations.
You will use a combination of telephone, email and LinkedIn to introduce the business, understand potential customer requirements, qualify opportunities and secure meetings for the sales team.
There is a strong emphasis on activity, ownership and results, so this role will suit someone who enjoys having clear targets and taking responsibility for their own pipeline.
What you'll be doing
Proactively contacting prospective customers by telephone, email and LinkedIn
Researching target organisations and identifying relevant decision-makers
Making confident, professional cold calls to senior stakeholders
Introducing the company's technology and value proposition clearly and credibly
Asking the right questions to understand business needs and qualify opportunities
Booking high-quality meetings for the wider sales team
Following up marketing campaigns, events and inbound enquiries
Maintaining accurate prospect and activity information within the CRM
Managing your own pipeline, diary and follow-up activity
Working towards agreed activity, opportunity and revenue targets
Working closely with senior commercial colleagues to develop new markets and opportunities
What we're looking for
We're looking for someone who is confident, commercially minded and comfortable picking up the phone.
You don't necessarily need years of experience. What's more important is that you're motivated by winning new business, resilient when things don't go your way and disciplined enough to consistently follow up.
Essential
Confidence speaking to senior decision-makers on the telephone
Comfortable making outbound and cold calls
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
Ability to work independently and manage your own workload
Good organisation and attention to detail
A disciplined approach to follow-up and CRM management
Resilience and persistence - you understand that not every conversation becomes an opportunity
A genuine interest in technology and new business
Right to work in the UK
Desirable
Previous experience in business development, lead generation, inside sales or a similar role
Experience in SaaS, software, AI, technology or another consultative sales environment
Experience selling into sectors such as retail, education, hospitality, automotive or the charity sector
Experience engaging with senior decision-makers or C-suite contacts
What's on offer?
£25,000-£35,000 basic salary, depending on experience
OTE up to £50,000
Uncapped commission on the business you generate
Annual performance bonus linked to achievement of agreed targets
Commission payable on orders you originate, including opportunities subsequently progressed and closed by other members of the sales team
Additional company benefits
Clear opportunity for progression as the commercial team grows
Career progression
This isn't intended to be a role where you simply spend your career booking meetings.
For the right person, there is a clear opportunity to progress into a broader full-cycle sales role, taking responsibility for your own appointments, attending client meetings, developing relationships and ultimately closing business yourself.
As your responsibility grows, so does your earning potential.
If you're already operating at that level, we'd also be interested in speaking with you.
Working hours
Monday to Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm
This is a predominantly office-based position in Shrewsbury, with occasional overnight travel for industry events, meetings and customer visits.
