About the Opportunity
This position is ideal for someone who wants to apply their technical expertise within a collaborative project management environment, contributing to the successful delivery of complex rail programmes. The company is seeking a Project Manager with proven experience in the rail sector to join their expanding team, supporting a portfolio of enhancement projects across York and the wider North-East region.
Current programmes include major station redevelopments, re‑signalling schemes, new station construction, infrastructure upgrades, and a range of technical and advisory commissions for high-profile clients.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
Leading the planning, development, and delivery of high-value, multi-disciplinary rail projects, ensuring risks to the operational railway are effectively managed.
Coordinating interfaces with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring compliance with governance, assurance, and third‑party requirements.
Ensuring all stakeholders adhere to the Railways Act and Network Licence obligations, delivering outputs in line with agreed expectations.
Interpreting client scope and programme information to define operational railway interface needs, offering clear guidance to support informed decision-making.
Working closely with CDM duty holders to ensure full compliance with CDM Regulations.
Securing and allocating appropriate resources, maintaining transparent communication on progress, milestones, and contingency planning.
Supporting cross‑organisational alignment to identify the correct proposer for infrastructure changes under the Common Safety Method (Risk Assessment) Regulations.
Monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on project risks and performance throughout the full lifecycle.
Capturing lessons learned and collaborating with stakeholders to embed improvements into future project proposals.
Building and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships, managing expectations while championing project objectives.
Identifying clashes or conflicting activities and driving coordinated, efficient delivery.
Assisting with investigations into accidents, incidents, and close calls, sharing insights and outcomes with client teams.
Demonstrating strong teamwork, client engagement, and clear communication.
Providing constructive challenge and sharing expertise through robust analysis and evaluation.
Required Technical Experience
Degree in Project Management or a related discipline.
Membership of (or working towards membership of) the Association for Project Management.
PRINCE2 Foundation (or equivalent qualification).
Strong understanding of operational railway environments and infrastructure.
Proven experience delivering projects within the rail sector.
Knowledge of commercial project requirements and programme controls.
Understanding of health, safety, and environmental legislation, including CDM Regulations and CSM‑RA.
Experience managing project budgets.
Knowledge of rail possessions and isolations.
Desirable Experience
Experience delivering third‑party projects on Network Rail infrastructure.
Familiarity with the Network Rail Asset Protection process.
Full project lifecycle experience.
1-2 years' experience in a consultancy-based project management role
