What will you do as a Sustaining Capex Project Planner?
The Sustaining Capex Project Planner is responsible for meticulously crafting and managing project schedules, resource allocation, and timelines to ensure the completion of projects. They are responsible for coordinating tasks, optimizing resource usage, and mitigating potential delays.
They will be responsible for creating the baseline schedule, re-baseline schedules, commodity graphs, reports, and performance curves. The Project Planner will report to the Sustaining Capex Project Portfolio Manager. The role may also be required to report on Growth Projects where required.

What do we expect from you as a Sustaining Capex Project Planner?
- Minimum requirements of National Diploma in Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management, or a related field.
- Software Proficiency required: Advanced skills in Primavera P6 (essential) and MS Projects (advantageous)
- Understanding of EVM
- Minimum of 5-7 years in project planning, preferably within the construction/petrochemical industry, with exposure to EPCM capital projects.
- Strong understanding of project planning best practices, maintenance planning, and capital project management.
- Sound Technical capability and understanding
- Hands-on Experience with Contractor Management
- Knowledge of QC Procedures
- Knowledge of Mechanical Systems

- Project scheduling and planning: Creating and managing project schedules, Gantt charts, and work breakdown structures (WBS).

Your core responsibilities are:
Project Scheduling and Planning
- Prepare an initial overall annual Sustaining Capex Portfolio execution plan for Lesedi and Durban terminals for the next calendar period to understand projects which can be executed within the available technical and project management resources and will be used as Sustaining Capex Portfolio baseline;
- Analyse various facets of project work and progress updates for completing the work in line with the baseline schedule;
- Collaboratively develop and maintain the Sustaining Capex Project Master schedule;
- Align baseline scheduling with inputs from the 8-week look-ahead plan;
- Layout, generate, and distribute schedule reports to internal and external personnel;
- Prepares and analyses critical path, resource loaded schedule and recommend solutions;
- Promote early corrective action to meet a project’s schedule and budget;
- Participate in large project reviews and other projects as designated;
- Support Project Managers with scheduling all project related engineering work packages;
- Work closely with Procurement and include all procurement work processes into the schedule for each project;
- Improve scheduling processes to support the above mentioned.
Monthly Reporting
- Internal project reporting and administration. Analyse site progress reports from Project Planners and Site Management to minimize all Risks.
- Be prepared to discuss project quality, client and team satisfaction, and project success during regularly scheduled and ad hoc project review meetings with the Project Managers.
- Track and report weekly on percentage complete, budget burn, earned value, slippage, project effort and duration to complete and other key project reports.
Resource Management
- Determine project roles of team members based on project requirements, timeframes and budget.
- When necessary work with external contractors in addition to internal resources.
- Review resource skill sets (competencies) required for the project based on project specifications and requirements according to the contract.
- Determine resource requirements (including staffing, software, hardware, and Facilities) of projects, based on project specifications.
- Manage contract Project Planners and Junior Planners.
Project Control
- Manage scope creep through client change orders, internal change orders, phased delivery or other methods to ensure projects deliver on timeline, scope, and budget.
- Evaluate all key project deliverables, as well as final product to ensure traceability of requirements, high quality and client acceptance.
- Responsible for formal sign off on all project baseline programmed.
- Identify, track, manage and mitigate risk on specific client engagements. Escalate these issues when necessary to ensure minimal impact to quality, budget, and timeline.
- Where project control is in jeopardy, create contingency plans with appropriate input from key team members and implement / Review a revised project schedule, scope or budget.
Project Communication
- Work with Manager Projects to ensure clients achieve an understanding of expectations, deliverables, dependencies, risks, progress and the bright works development process.
- If needed, create customized reporting for the client or team.
- Use sound judgment in all project communication and ensure that key stakeholders including the Team, client and management are apprised of project activities.
3YMP Planning and Budget Cycle Preparation
- Planning and Development of Annual Budget Cycle preparation.
- Prepare and implement the Annual Budget Schedule.
- Input to Annual planning in preparation with Budget Gate Review.
- Tracking and updating critical deliverables as input during the Budget Cycle.
