As the Group Environmental Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring effective implementation and adherence to environmental standards and guidelines applicable to the mining operations, including adherence to environmental legislation.
Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
- Implement procedural, reporting and monitoring requirements as prescribed by Environmental Legislation and applicable Regulations.
- Development and Implementation of Environmental Standard Operating Procedures.
- Creating environmental awareness amongst employees through toolbox talks, etc.
- Ensure all environmental impacts are routinely assessed and addressed.
- Environmental risk assessment and hazard identification.
- Implementing, maintaining and monitoring an environmental management system based on the operations’ approved Environmental Management Programme.
- Managing and distribution of pertinent environmental monitoring data.
- Maintaining a system of reporting environmental incidents and reviewing recommendations to rectify deviations.
- Updating and maintaining the operations’ environmental aspect register and monitoring management programmes/actions for significant aspects.
- Direct employees and contractors on how to implement environmental requirements such as pollution control, waste reduction, and best environmental management practices.
- Conduct regular environmental audits to ensure adherence to environmental requirements.
- Ensure effective implementation of recommendations made by External Environmental Auditors.
- Manage Waste Collection on site and maintain records of waste disposal certificates.
- Developing action plans for incidents, complaints, and audits.
- Compile reports for water and air quality monitoring and maintain a database of water consumption and distribution.
- Effectively interact with clients, officials, contractors, and others.
- Perform advisory functions to employees at an operational level.
- Provide support on environmental aspects for applications for rights, permits, authorisations, and licences.
- Ensure accurate submission/reporting of various Environment reports to statutory/regulatory bodies, as required.
- Ensure legal compliance of all Environment policies and provide input into policy updates and reviews.
- Ensure all internal and external audits are carried out to comply with regulatory procedures.
- Maintain good liaison relationships with stakeholders involved.
- Prepare service reports for services rendered to the company for environmental services providers.
- Provide support and guidance to environmental officer on site.
- Project management for specialists and applications for authorisations and new projects.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Relevant degree or diploma in Environmental Science/Environmental Management.
- 3-5 years’ experience in mining/process environment in related field.
- Professional Registration (advantage).
- Computer literacy: MS Office and MS Excel.
- Presentation and facilitation skills.
