Job Purpose:
To support the department in pursuit of its academic objectives which include teaching on the Dental Assisting and Dental Technology programmes, undertake research, contribute to curriculum development as well as engagement in work-integrated learning and community engagement activities. Meeting core academic expectations to facilitate the delivery of the Dental Assisting and Dental Technology programmes offered in the department, as well as perform all related academic, research, and administrative tasks associated with the academic role, department, faculty, and institution.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- A Master’s degree in a health-related field with an undergraduate degree in the Dental field (Dentistry, Dental Therapy, Oral Hygiene, or related).
- Registration and good standing with the HPCSA.
- At least two (2) years of relevant lecturing experience in Higher Education and/or five (5) years of professional work experience in the Dental Field.
Preference will be given to candidates who meet the minimum requirements at Lecturer level.
Recommendations:
- Qualification in Dental Assisting.
- Evidence of progress towards completion of a Doctoral qualification.
- Academic experience at a higher education institution.
- Recent track record of research supervision and research outputs.
- Postgraduate teaching qualification.
- A Bachelor’s degree or Post Graduate qualification in a health-related field with an undergraduate qualification in the dental field (Dentistry, Dental Therapy, Oral Hygiene or related).
- Registration and good standing with the HPCSA.
- At least one (1) year relevant lecturing experience in Higher Education and/or five (5) years of professional work experience in the Dental field.
The appointment at Junior Lecturer level is a 5-year contract subject to completion of master’s degree qualification within this period. Upon completion of the master’s qualification, conversion to permanent and at Lecturer level will be subject to institutional governance for approval.
Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities:
- Lecturing and assessment of aspects of dental assisting.
- Demonstrating dental assisting procedures and supervision of practical sessions.
- Preparation of models and sample work for practical sessions, assessments and demonstrations.
- Develop course material and innovative teaching and learning methods.
- Identify at risk students, develop intervention strategies and monitor student progress.
- Integrate academic support especially in literacy and numeracy into their subject teaching.
- Plan, co-ordinate and supervise academic activities.
- Participate in curriculum development and quality assurance of the programmes.
- Academic administration, assessment and subject management.
- Liaison with the dentistry and dental technology professionals.
- Employer liaison, supervision and assessment of workplace and community based learning.
- Contribute to Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for the Dental practitioners.
- Assisting with departmental initiatives, encompassing the development, support, implementation and evaluation of strategic and operational plans.
- Assist with student registration and departmental administration.
- Conduct research and contribute towards departmental research outputs.
- Involvement in service learning as well as community outreach initiatives.

- Excellent command of the English language and communication skills.
- Good interpersonal and high-level presentation and facilitation skills.
- Good organizational and time management skills.
- Proficient in all aspects of dental assisting and academic activities related to higher education.
