Job Purpose
The purpose of this position is for the incumbent to provide architectural services as defined in the Architectural Profession Act 2000 (Act No 44 of 2000) within the Infrastructure Development and Facilities Management Department.
The incumbent must:
- Have a practical understanding of structures and materials to develop concepts, plans, specifications and detailed drawings for buildings and other structures.
- Be able to negotiate with all internal and external stakeholders such as contractors, planning authorities and end-users.
- Administer building contracts.
- Inspect the work carried out and take into account all aspects of the design, structure and purpose of a building project.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- A relevant Bachelor’s Degree or BTech in Architecture (NQF Level 7).
- Professionally registered with SACAP (South African Council for the Architectural Profession).
- At least Five (5) years related experience.
- A Valid Driver’s License.
- Strong background within the built environment.
- Proven experience with construction contracts.
- Proven experience in the procurement process of projects.
Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities
- Preparing submissions and obtaining necessary approvals from authorities.
- Develop master plans for proposed university buildings and prepare detailed development and other plans and specifications.
- Design projects and/or review architectural or engineering plans, specifications, and contract documents for building construction projects to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and minimum standards/criteria.
- Prepare and/or review preliminary designs, working drawings, specifications, and cost estimates pertaining to the construction of buildings and building systems.
- Prepare final sketch drawings, production drawings and detailed drawings, and combine structural, mechanical, and artistic elements.
- Discuss requirements of clients or contractors and prepare a brief.
- Discuss designs and cost estimates with all stakeholders.
- Conduct structural, mechanical, electrical, operational, and maintenance surveys and recommend corrective action where necessary.
- Prepare specifications and contract documents.
- Participate in preparation and evaluation of tenders.
- Observe, inspect, and monitor building work.
- Visit sites of building projects during construction.
- Advise contractors on the interpretation of plans.
- Evaluate projects once they are completed and occupied.
- Provide technical expertise in development or review of policies and procedures.
- Conduct project feasibility studies, strategic asset investigations, heritage studies, urban planning, interior design, or landscape design.
- Maintain records and prepare reports and correspondence related to the work.
