Evolve Staffing Ltd. is actively seeking highly experienced, adaptable, and dedicated Band 5 HCPC Registered Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) specialising in Recovery / Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) to join operating department teams across major NHS Hospital Trusts in Bournemouth, Dorset.
This role provides exceptional flexibility and top-tier pay rates for experienced recovery ODPs who excel in high-acuity perioperative environments. Operating within Bournemouth's leading NHS acute hospital infrastructure, you will work as an integral clinical professional alongside consultant anaesthetists, surgical teams, theatre managers, and recovery healthcare professionals to deliver safe, evidence-based, and compassionate post-operative care across a diverse range of elective, emergency, and trauma surgical lists.
Whether you are deeply skilled in managing post-anaesthetic emergence, stabilizing complex physiological complications, or administering multimodal analgesia, this vacancy offers an ideal pathway to flexible agency shifts within one of Dorset’s flagship coastal healthcare facilities.
Key Responsibilities & Clinical Duties
As a Band 5 Recovery ODP, your primary responsibility is to ensure maximum patient safety, precise airway maintenance, and continuous physiological stabilization during the immediate post-operative phase in PACU.

-
Continuous monitoring and maintenance of airway patency following general, regional, or local anaesthesia, managing extubation and laryngeal mask airway (LMA) emergence.
-
Promptly managing acute airway emergencies, including laryngospasm, bronchospasm, hypoventilation, airway obstruction, and delayed emergence from anaesthesia.
-
Administering oxygen therapy, utilizing non-invasive ventilatory support, performing suctioning, and interpreting continuous capnography ($EtCO_2$) and blood gases (ABGs).
Physiological Monitoring & Resuscitation
-
Monitoring real-time vital signs using NEWS2, multi-lead ECG interpretation, non-invasive and invasive blood pressure monitoring (arterial lines), and central venous pressure (CVP).
-
Assessing post-operative wound sites, drain outputs, fluid balance, IV therapy, and administering emergency blood products during active hemorrhage or shock.
-
Utilizing active rewarming systems (e.g., forced-air warming) to treat hypothermia and prevent post-anaesthetic shivering.
Analgesia, Symptom Control & Discharge
-
Titrating prescribed intravenous analgesia, monitoring Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA) pumps, epidural infusions, and regional nerve block catheters.
-
Managing post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) using antiemetics in line with NHS Trust clinical guidelines and protocols.
-
Utilizing standardized scoring frameworks (e.g., modified Aldrete Score or PADSS) to evaluate patient readiness for transfer to surgical wards, delivering SBAR handovers.
