Registered Building Inspector – Building Control
Location: Shropshire – Shrewsbury and surrounding areas
Pay Rate: £36.67 per hour PAYE / £1,356.79 (37 hours)
Contract: 6 months initially
Hours: 37 hours per week
Working Pattern: Flexible hybrid – home working available, with office attendance and site inspections as required
DBS Requirement: Basic DBS
The Opportunity
LYNX Employment Services are recruiting experienced Registered Building Inspectors to support a local authority Building Control service in Shropshire.
We are seeking professionals with strong technical knowledge of Building Regulations, plan checking and building control compliance.
There are two potential opportunities available:
Plan Checking / Plan Assessment: Primarily reviewing building plans, assessing applications and ensuring compliance with Building Regulations.
Plan Checking & Site Inspections: A combination of technical plan assessment and on-site building inspections across the local authority area.
Both positions offer flexible working arrangements, making them attractive opportunities for experienced inspectors looking for a degree of autonomy.
Key Responsibilities
Undertake detailed plan checking and assessment of Building Regulations applications.
Review architectural drawings, construction details and supporting technical documentation.
Assess compliance with current Building Regulations, Approved Documents and relevant legislation.
Conduct site inspections where required to assess construction works and regulatory compliance.
Identify non-compliant works and recommend appropriate corrective or enforcement action.
Liaise with architects, developers, contractors, building professionals and members of the public.
Maintain accurate inspection records, technical assessments and case documentation.
Provide professional advice on Building Control requirements and regulatory compliance.
Support the assessment of dangerous structures and other Building Control matters where appropriate.
Manage an independent caseload while meeting statutory deadlines and service standards.
Essential Requirements
Current registration with the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) at Class 2D or above.
Strong experience in Building Control, particularly plan checking and plan assessment.
Comprehensive knowledge of Building Regulations, Approved Documents and associated legislation.
Experience assessing building applications and identifying regulatory compliance issues.
Ability to undertake site inspections and prepare detailed technical reports.
Relevant building-related degree or equivalent qualification.
Full professional membership of RICS, CABE or CIOB (MRICS, MCABE or MCIOB).
Strong communication, organisation and IT skills.
Ability to work independently and manage competing deadlines.
Full UK driving licence and access to a suitable vehicle for site visits.
Basic DBS check required.
Desirable Experience
Five or more years of Building Control experience.
Previous experience within a local authority Building Control service.
Experience working with domestic, commercial and more complex construction projects.
Knowledge of Idox / Uniform or similar Building Control systems.
Experience supporting enforcement activity and advising construction professionals.
Working Arrangements
The client offers a flexible hybrid working arrangement, with opportunities to work from home when not required on site.
Office attendance may be approximately once per week, subject to operational requirements and individual arrangements.
For the inspection-focused position, candidates must be available to undertake site visits as required. Inspection days may vary, with key inspection appointments taking place around 8:30am and 2:00pm.
