Passive Fire Protection Technical Consultant
About the Role
We are recruiting an experienced Passive Fire Protection Technical Consultant to join a growing, highly regarded fire protection and compliance team. This is a preconstruction role combining technical consultancy with estimating, offering the chance to work on complex, high-profile projects.
Key Responsibilities
Preconstruction (PCSA Periods)
Provide expert technical guidance on passive fire protection systems, including fire stopping, fire doors, penetration seals, linear gap seals, cavity barriers and structural fire protection (intumescent coatings, boards and encasement systems)
Interpret and apply relevant standards and legislation, including Building Regulations, Approved Document B, and BS and EN standards
Review drawings, specifications and method statements for compliance with fire safety and structural fire resistance requirements
Assess fire resistance requirements for steel, concrete and composite structures in line with approved fire strategies
Carry out technical assessments and surveys on existing and new-build projects
Arrange testing where required
Support compliance with third-party accreditation schemes (e.g. FIRAS, ASFP)
Consultancy and Advisory
Produce technical reports, compliance statements and project-specific recommendations
Provide product and system selection advice aligned with fire strategies and structural fire ratings
Support value engineering while maintaining compliance, performance and durability
Assist with technical training for internal teams and clients, particularly on structural and passive fire protection systems
Digital Design and Modelling
Use Tekla Structures to review, interrogate and coordinate models for passive and structural fire protection requirements
Provide costs for intumescent estimation and elemental analysis, using FIRETEX Design Estimator, Steel-Clad and HEET
Identify interfaces, clashes and buildability issues relating to fire protection in structural models
Support coordination with structural engineers, steelwork contractors and fire engineers using BIM workflows
Contribute to accurate as-built fire protection records using digital models where required under Regulation 38
Essential Skills and Experience
Proven experience in passive fire protection or fire safety consultancy
Strong knowledge of structural fire protection systems and fire resistance ratings
Practical experience reviewing or working with BIM models
Excellent understanding of UK fire regulations and standards
Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural and MEP drawings
Strong report-writing and stakeholder communication skills
Required Qualifications
Relevant industry qualifications (e.g. ASFP Level 2/3, IFE, or a fire safety or structural fire engineering background)
Experience on complex or high-risk buildings (e.g. high-rise, infrastructure, commercial developments)
Familiarity with BIM Level 2 processes and digital handover requirements
Familiarity with Navisworks, BIM and ACC platforms
Knowledge of third-party certification and inspection regimes
