Highways Engagement Officer
We are looking for an experienced Highways Engagement Officer to support a busy programme of priority highways projects. This is a public-facing role focused on stakeholder and community engagement, helping to ensure residents, businesses and local organisations are kept informed and have opportunities to provide feedback.
You will work across multiple schemes, coordinating engagement activity, managing stakeholder enquiries and supporting in-person events such as drop-ins, exhibitions, workshops, meetings and site visits.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and maintain stakeholder maps, contact records and engagement plans.
Coordinate engagement activity across several highways projects and ensure key deadlines are met.
Manage and respond to enquiries from residents, businesses, community groups, Members and other stakeholders.
Organise and support public-facing engagement events, including drop-ins, workshops, exhibitions and meetings.
Coordinate engagement materials such as letters, leaflets, posters, surveys and accessible or translated information.
Record and analyse feedback, identifying key themes, concerns and emerging issues.
Produce clear engagement reports, summaries, briefings and project updates.
Work closely with Highways, Communications and Engagement teams and other internal services.
Ensure engagement is inclusive, accessible and compliant with data protection requirements.
Escalate sensitive or complex issues appropriately and maintain accurate records and audit trails.
About You
The ideal candidate will have:
Experience supporting or delivering stakeholder, community, customer or public engagement activity.
Experience coordinating public-facing events, meetings, workshops, drop-ins or similar activities.
Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage several projects, tasks and deadlines at once.
Experience managing enquiries and communicating with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain information clearly in plain English.
Experience maintaining records, trackers or databases and producing reports or summaries.
Confidence dealing with challenging or sensitive conversations in a calm and professional manner.
Good knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams.
An understanding of equality, accessibility, confidentiality and data protection requirements.
Experience within a local authority, highways, transport, infrastructure, regeneration or another complex public-service environment would be desirable, although detailed technical highways knowledge is not essential.
You will need to be comfortable attending meetings, site visits and public engagement events across Lewisham, with occasional evening or weekend work required.
No direct line management responsibility
