Financial Controller
Stratford-upon-Avon
£50,000 - £60,000 DOE
A well-established family-run business is looking to appoint a Financial Controller to take ownership of the company's day-to-day finance function.
This is a newly created role, so there isn't an existing accounts team or established finance department to step into. We're looking for someone who is happy to roll their sleeves up, get stuck in and build the function from the ground up.
You'll have a broad remit covering everything from credit control and payments through to monthly management accounts, cashflow forecasting and payroll. It's a hands-on position and would suit someone who enjoys having responsibility, making improvements and being close to the numbers and the wider business.
Experience within the construction, concrete, building materials or a similar environment would be a real advantage.
The role
You'll be responsible for managing the company's finance function and ensuring the business has accurate, timely financial information and strong financial controls.
Key responsibilities will include:
Managing day-to-day finance and accounting activities
Preparing monthly management accounts and financial reports
Managing credit control, aged debt and customer accounts
Overseeing month-end processes and ensuring accounts are closed accurately and on time
Managing end-of-month payments, supplier payments and payment runs
Preparing and maintaining cashflow forecasts
Monitoring cash position and working capital
Managing purchase and sales ledgers
Bank reconciliations and general ledger management
Processing and overseeing payroll
Managing VAT returns and other statutory submissions
Supporting the year-end accounts and relationship with external accountants/auditors
Preparing budgets, forecasts and variance analysis
Monitoring costs, margins and profitability
Reviewing and improving existing financial processes and controls
Maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring appropriate financial controls are in place
Providing financial information and insight to the owners/directors to support decision-making
Identifying opportunities to improve systems, processes and financial performance
About you
We're looking for someone who is practical, commercially minded and happy to be hands-on.
You won't be walking into a large finance department with everything already set up. You'll need to be comfortable getting into the detail, sorting things out and putting the right processes in place.
You'll ideally have:
Strong all-round accounting knowledge
Experience preparing monthly management accounts
Good understanding of cashflow and working capital
Payroll experience
Strong Excel skills and confidence working with financial systems
The confidence to work independently and take ownership
Good commercial awareness and the ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial people
