IT Support Engineer
Location: Bolton – predominantly on-site with travel across the North West
Salary: £30,000–£40,000, dependent on experience
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am–4:45pm
Contract: Permanent
We are recruiting an experienced IT Support Engineer to join the established, three-person IT team of a successful and growing multi-site retail and manufacturing business.
Supporting a sizeable network of retail locations across the North West, this is a varied, hands on role covering day to day user support, infrastructure, networking, business systems and operational technology. You could be resolving a desktop issue one moment and supporting a server, EPOS, networking or ERP related problem the next.
This would suit a capable IT generalist who enjoys investigating problems properly and finding practical solutions. It is not a narrowly defined support position or a role for someone who prefers to pass more complex issues elsewhere. You will be encouraged to get involved across the technology estate, contribute to projects and help improve the way systems are supported and developed.
The role
Working alongside two experienced IT colleagues, your responsibilities will include:
-
Providing first and second-line support to users across the business
-
Maintaining desktops, laptops, servers and Microsoft applications
-
Supporting Microsoft Windows Server, Active Directory and Exchange environments
-
Assisting with Microsoft server administration
-
Supporting a planned migration from VMware to Hyper-V
-
Troubleshooting networks across the head office and retail estate
-
Supporting backup and disaster-recovery processes using Veeam
-
Providing support for EPOS technology across multiple retail locations
-
Supporting the company’s ERP system and helping introduce new functionality
-
Using Microsoft SQL to investigate issues and support business systems
-
Supporting CCTV, telephony and mobile-device management
-
Maintaining accurate technical documentation and procedures
-
Working with external suppliers and technology partners
-
Contributing to infrastructure improvements and wider IT projects
What we are looking for
We are particularly interested in someone with broad, hands-on IT experience. However, practical ability, attitude and breadth of knowledge will be more important than an exact number of years.
You should be able to demonstrate:
-
Strong first and second line IT support experience
-
Practical knowledge of Microsoft SQL
-
Experience supporting desktops, laptops and servers
-
Knowledge of Active Directory, Exchange and Windows Server
-
A good understanding of networking and infrastructure troubleshooting
-
The ability to investigate unfamiliar problems and work towards a solution
-
Strong communication, organisation and problem-solving skills
-
Confidence working with colleagues at every level of a business
-
A proactive and adaptable approach
Experience within a retail, food-manufacturing or similarly fast-moving, multi-site environment would be helpful but is not essential.
Travel and on-call requirements
You will need a clean driving licence, access to your own vehicle and the flexibility to travel between company locations when required. A pool car is available for business travel during the working week.
The position includes an on call rota of approximately one week in every three. During this week, you will provide out of hours support by telephone and may occasionally need to attend a retail location on a Saturday morning where an issue cannot be resolved remotely.
Benefits
-
Salary of £30,000–£40,000, dependent on experience
-
37.5-hour working week
-
28 days’ annual leave, including bank holidays
-
On-site parking
-
Access to a pool car for business travel
-
Broad exposure to infrastructure, business systems and operational technology
-
The opportunity to contribute to future technology projects and improvements
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants greater variety and ownership than a conventional service desk position can offer, while joining a stable and successful organisation with a substantial operational footprint
