We are seeking an experienced Safety Advisor to support a major Tier 1 civils contractor on a high-profile infrastructure project in the Dumfries area.
The successful candidate will provide professional health and safety advice across site operations, working closely with project management, site teams, subcontractors and the wider SHEQ function to ensure the project is delivered safely, compliantly and to the highest industry standards.
This is an excellent opportunity for a proactive Health & Safety professional with experience in civil engineering, infrastructure or major construction projects, who is confident operating in a fast-paced site environment and influencing teams at all levels.
Responsibilities

Provide competent health and safety advice and support to the project management and site teams.

Conduct regular site inspections, audits and behavioural safety observations, identifying areas for improvement and ensuring appropriate corrective actions are implemented.

Monitor compliance with relevant UK health and safety legislation, company policies, procedures and project-specific requirements.

Support the development, review and implementation of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).

Assist with the planning and coordination of safe systems of work across civils and infrastructure activities.

Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences, identifying root causes and appropriate preventative measures.

Provide advice and guidance to site management, supervisors, operatives and subcontractors on health and safety matters.

Support toolbox talks, briefings, safety campaigns and other initiatives designed to promote a positive safety culture.

Monitor subcontractor performance and ensure appropriate health and safety standards are maintained.

Contribute to project SHEQ meetings, reporting and performance reviews.

Assist with the implementation and monitoring of project emergency arrangements.

Maintain accurate health and safety records, documentation and inspection reports.

Promote continuous improvement and a proactive approach to risk management across the project.

Work collaboratively with the wider SHEQ team to ensure consistent standards across the project.
The Ideal Candidate

NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent health and safety qualification.

Ideally TechIOSH, GradIOSH or CMIOSH membership, or working towards professional membership.

Previous experience in a Safety Advisor role within civil engineering, infrastructure or major construction projects.

Experience working for a Tier 1 contractor would be highly advantageous.

Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and construction industry best practice.

Experience with RAMS, site inspections, audits, incident investigation and risk management.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and challenge site teams effectively.

A proactive, practical approach to health and safety, with the confidence to engage with personnel at all levels.

Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively to a wider project team.

Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.

A genuine commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and promoting a positive safety culture.

CSCS/SMSTS or equivalent construction-site experience would be advantageous.

Full UK driving licence is desirable due to the site-based nature of the role
