Catering Assistant
We are seeking a reliable and enthusiastic Catering Assistant to join the team at Great Western Hospital on a long-term sickness cover assignment. Location: Great Western Hospital
Pay Rate: £12.71 per hour
Contract Type: Temporary
Duration: Ongoing long-term sickness cover with no fixed end date
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
You will be required to work 5 days per week on a rotating schedule.
A rota will be provided up to 6 weeks in advance.
Full flexibility is essential as you must be able to work all of the following shift patterns:
07:00 - 15:00
11:00 - 19:00
12:00 - 20:00About the Role
As a Catering Assistant, you will play an important part in ensuring patients receive the meals they need while supporting the smooth operation of the hospital's catering services. Working as part of a dedicated team, you will help prepare, serve, and deliver food in line with strict food safety and hygiene standards.This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people, values teamwork, and understands the importance of delivering a high-quality service in a healthcare setting.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation and Service
Assist with the preparation of meals, snacks, and beverages.
Follow portion control and food presentation standards.
Prepare, pack, label, and store food safely.
Support the preparation of allergen-sensitive and texture-modified meals.
Serve food and beverages in accordance with hygiene and safety procedures.Food Safety and Compliance
Follow HACCP principles and Level 2 Food Hygiene standards.
Carry out and record food safety checks.
Complete temperature monitoring and food safety documentation accurately.
Ensure all food handling procedures meet required standards.Cleaning and Hygiene
Maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout catering areas.
Clean equipment, workstations, and food preparation areas.
Support scheduled deep cleaning activities.
Adhere to infection prevention and control procedures.Teamwork and Service Delivery
Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure meals are prepared and delivered on time.
Provide a professional and courteous service to patients, visitors, and staff.
Contribute to a positive and supportive team environment.What We're Looking For
Essential Skills and Experience
Previous experience within a catering, kitchen, or food service environment.
Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
Understanding of food hygiene, food safety, and allergen awareness.
Strong communication and customer service skills.
Ability to work efficiently in a busy environment.
Flexibility to work all shift patterns listed.Desirable
Previous experience within a healthcare, hospital, or care home setting.
Knowledge of NHS dietary requirements, including IDDSI.
Experience completing food safety records and documentation.Personal Qualities
