About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated HGV Mechanic / VMU Technician to join an on-site Vehicle Maintenance Unit (VMU). The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out first-line repairs and preventative maintenance on our truck and trailer fleet, helping to ensure maximum vehicle availability and compliance.
This role requires an individual who can thrive in a fast-paced environment, work effectively as part of a supportive team, and use their own initiative when required. A strong commitment to health and safety and maintaining high housekeeping standards is essential.

Key Responsibilities
-
Carry out fault diagnosis and first-line repairs on trucks and trailers, including curtain repairs, lighting repairs, mirror replacements and step repairs.

Conduct Preventative Maintenance Inspections (PMIs) on trailers to a high standard.

Respond to vehicle defects and live issues presented by drivers, completing repairs where appropriate.

Perform daily inspections of rolling stock and address minor defects to minimise fleet downtime.

Ensure all maintenance activities comply with company policies, legal requirements and industry standards.

Maintain a safe, clean and organised working environment in accordance with Health & Safety regulations.

Complete all required maintenance records, inspection reports and compliance documentation accurately.

Carry out weekly and monthly VMU checks and maintain audit trails.

Monitor stock levels and communicate parts requirements to the VMU Team Leader.

Support the wider maintenance team and undertake additional duties as reasonably requested by management.
About You
The ideal candidate will possess:

A full UK driving licence

Proven experience carrying out first-line repairs on HGV trucks and trailers

Strong knowledge and experience of Preventative Maintenance Inspections (PMIs)

Understanding of truck and trailer legal compliance requirements

Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills

Good written and verbal communication skills

Experience using maintenance and compliance systems accurately

A proactive approach to health, safety and housekeeping standards

The ability to work independently and as part of a team

A strong track record of completing repairs efficiently and on time
