Senior Bookkeeper / Senior Finance Administrator / Accountant
Hybrid working pattern – Gloucester – ideally 4 days onsite & 1 day WFH
Are you a highly organised, processdriven finance professional ready to take ownership of a business’s bookkeeping and transactional finance? My client is an innovative construction scale up on an exciting growth trajectory, and they’re looking for a Senior Bookkeeper to help shape and strengthen their finance function.
This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys improving workflows and controls, and wants real influence in a growing business.
What You’ll Do
Working closely with the Head of Commercial and Project Accountants, you’ll ensure that all financial data is accurate, timely, and well-controlled across operational and project-based activities. Key responsibilities include:
Core Finance & Bookkeeping

Maintain accurate accounts, including sales and purchase ledgers, bank reconciliations, and the general ledger

Manage supplier invoices from receipt to payment

Prepare VAT returns and ensure correct treatment

Support month-end processes, including accruals, prepayments, and balance sheet reconciliations
Cashflow & Payments

Prepare and manage supplier payment runs
-
Monitor short-term cashflow and assist with forecasting

Maintain control over aged creditors and resolve supplier queries
Process & Controls Improvement

Implement and enforce procure-to-pay processes with clear approvals and audit trails

Improve invoice accuracy, financial workflows, and reporting

Support finance automation and digital efficiency initiatives

Document and embed best practice finance procedures
Systems & Reporting

Own and maintain Xero (or equivalent cloud accounting system) integrity

Collaborate with Project Accountants to capture accurate project costs

Support management reporting and audit-ready record keeping
Team & Business Support

Act as the key finance contact for non-finance colleagues

Potentially support or supervise a Finance Administrator as the team grows

Provide a dependable and trusted finance presence across the business
Essential skills and experience:

Xero or equivalent cloud accounting software

Proven experience as a Senior Bookkeeper or similar in an SME environment

Strong understanding of UK accounting practices and VAT

Highly organised, with great attention to detail and time-management skills

Confident working independently and taking ownership
Desirable:

AAT qualified or qualified by experience

Experience in construction, engineering, utilities, or project-based industries

Track record of improving finance processes in growing organisations

Exposure to project accounting or cost tracking
