The Role
As an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you will support the commercial and operational teams across a varied portfolio of projects ranging from £250k to £3m. You’ll be hands‑on from day one, gaining exposure to measurements, cost control, tendering, procurement, and financial reporting.
This role offers excellent development, structured support from senior colleagues, and the opportunity to progress toward Quantity Surveyor level.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in analysing drawings, specifications, and construction information to prepare accurate quantities and cost data.
- Support the preparation of valuations, cost forecasts, cash‑flows, and monthly commercial reports.
- Help track variations and update project budgets in line with design or scope changes.
- Contribute to tender preparation, pricing schedules, and procurement activity.
- Help gather and organise cost data for monitoring project performance.
- Support with subcontractor enquiries, comparisons, negotiation, and appointment.
- Build positive working relationships with clients, site teams, contractors, and suppliers.
- Join site visits to understand progress, collect information, and resolve commercial queries.
- Ensure commercial documentation is accurate, up‑to‑date, and compliant with internal processes.
Skills & Experience You’ll Need
- Understanding of construction costs, measurement, or estimating (experience up to £3m projects beneficial).
- High attention to detail, especially when working with figures and technical information.
- Strong organisation skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Analytical thinker with problem‑solving ability.
- Confident communicator who can build positive working relationships.
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Excel.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to visit sites when required.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- A degree, HNC/HND, or ongoing studies in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or a related discipline.
- Experience within UK construction or facilities management (e.g., placement, internship, or assistant role).
- Previous experience working for a similar contractor or organisation operating in refurbishment, fit‑out, or facilities‑led construction.
- Façade experience (e.g., involvement in external envelope works, cladding packages, or façade‑related surveying/estimating tasks).
- Familiarity with estimating software or cost management tools.
