Polytec are seeking a proactive and practical Health, Safety and Facilities Assistant for our client based just north of Cambridge. This role is to support the Health and Safety and Facilities teams by carrying out maintenance, repairs and safety-related tasks. This is a physical role involving manual handling, lifting and occasional working at height. You will work both indoors and outdoors in varying conditions, with some flexibility in working hours required to meet operational needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform day-to-day upkeep of the building, including small-scale repairs such as basic plumbing, joinery, decorating and floor maintenance.
- Act on maintenance issues and fault reports in a timely and efficient manner.
- Provide support with office reconfigurations, room preparations and light refurbishment tasks.
- Carry out routine site inspections to proactively spot and log maintenance concerns.
- Maintain tools, equipment and storage areas in a safe, clean and serviceable condition.
- Take part in scheduled health and safety inspections and compliance checks.
- Recognise potential hazards and escalate concerns to the Facilities or Health and Safety team.
- Assist in applying risk assessments and adhering to approved safe working practices.
- Ensure safety notices, protective barriers and related equipment are correctly positioned and kept in good condition.
- Support fire safety activities, including emergency lighting tests, fire checks and evacuation readiness.
Essential Requirements
- Demonstrable experience in a facilities, caretaking or maintenance-based role.
- Hands-on ability across a range of general building maintenance tasks.
- Working knowledge of health and safety legislation and safe working principles.
- Competence in recognising risks and maintaining a safe working environment.
- Strong practical problem-solving ability with close attention to detail.
- Capable of working autonomously while balancing multiple priorities.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Desirable Qualifications
- Formal Health and Safety training or certifications (such as IOSH or COSHH awareness).
- Recognised trade qualifications or relevant vocational education.
- Valid First Aid and/or Fire Safety certification.
