The Role:
We are currently supporting a well-established organisation in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, who are seeking an experienced Payroll & Accounts Assistant to join their finance team on a maternity-cover contract. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with strong payroll and management accounts experience who thrives in a busy, deadline-driven environment.
As the Payroll & Accounts Assistant, you will play a key role in delivering accurate payroll, VAT reporting, month-end duties and banking tasks. Working closely with internal teams, you will be joining a supportive, professional finance function where your contribution will be genuinely valued. This Payroll & Accounts Assistant role is offered on a hybrid basis—3 days in the office and 2 from home, working 08:30–17:00, Monday to Friday.
Main Responsibilities:

End-to-end preparation of payroll for 250+ employees

Processing monthly overtime and holiday pay calculations

Working closely with HR and an external payroll provider to ensure payroll accuracy

Preparing and posting month-end journals and accruals

Completing balance sheet reconciliations and resolving discrepancies

Posting intercompany recharges

Supporting payment runs, bank posting and bank reconciliations

Managing expense system users, training and payment runs

Preparing VAT reports and contributing to annual PSA & P11D work
Skills / Experience:

AAT qualified or equivalent

Proven experience in payroll processing

Strong understanding of management accounts

Advanced Excel skills (Pivot Tables, data analysis)

Ability to work under pressure and manage tight month-end deadlines

High level of accuracy and attention to detail
