Purpose of the role:
Take ownership of projects assigned by the R&D Manager or relevant Sales Account Manager, driving innovation and continuous improvement in product development; seamless scaling from lab to production. Ensure compliance with industry standards, optimise cost and consistent quality. Provide pro-active technical support, maintain and enhance systems, and foster collaboration across teams to achieve exceptional results with internal and external clients.
Qualifications, Experience, and Job Requirements
- Tertiary Qualification (Degree / Diploma) in Food Technology or Food Science
- Minimum 1 - 5 years of research and developments experience (Dairy, Beverage, Confectionary and Culinary environment advantageous)
- Proficient in MS office suite
- Excellent written & verbal communication skills (in English or Afrikaans)
- A valid driver’s license and own reliable transport required
- Ability to taste a variety of food and beverages

Brief description and key performance areas:
- New Product Development: Full responsibility of trials such as ensuring raw materials are available, full traceability of specifications and relevant information. Compiling of Technical Data Sheets, Certificates of Conformance and Nutritional Information etc. Assist with new product formulations and costings. Ensuring all deadlines for projects are met. Testing and approving new raw materials. Translating laboratory formulations to technical batch cards for production. Oversee the scaling up of laboratory formulations to production level, ensuring that product quality is achieved. Assist in managing rework stock on a regular basis in conjunction with the Quality and Production Departments.
- Research: Research new product development with a main focus on Dairy, Beverage, Culinary and Confectionary applications. Write reports, summaries and protocols with regards to new product development. Provide technical support to the Sales, Quality and Production Departments. Stay up-to-date with the latest industry information, trends, technologies and legislation.
- System Implementation and Maintenance: Compile, review and maintain Standard Operating Procedures and laboratory equipment, laboratory analysis, compiling of documentation, etc. Compile, review and maintain product Technical Data Sheets. Manage the loading of new raw materials, loading new products and maintenance thereof.
- Human Resources: Foster a collaborative and supportive environment within the R&D team, promoting strong working relationships and effective communication. Actively upskill team members by sharing knowledge and expertise to drive growth and development. Exhibit a positive, motivational attitude while maintaining courtesy and respect toward all colleagues, contributing to a harmonious and productive workplace culture.
- Cost Optimisation: Optimise cost efficiency by implementing value engineering strategies for existing products and ensuring new product development remains cost-effective, without compromising quality or innovation.
