Scope of Responsibility:
The Professional Dental Detailer is responsible for building up and strengthening the scientific image of Colgate with practicing dental professionals and building trusting, long-term relationships with them. This position acts as a direct interface with accounts in an assigned geographic territory (different types of accounts exist and are defined as general dental and specialty practices, government accounts, private accounts, dental hospitals, community health centers, pharmacists and dental distributors/depots). The detailer will achieve predetermined brand usage, recommendation and account sales KPI’s that align with annual territory budget goals.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develops a strong professional relationship and rapport with dental practitioners (e.g., dentists, dental specialists, dental hygienists, etc) and staff, as well as community health administrators and hospitals
- Develops in-depth knowledge on each dental office account
- Develops and implements specific account contact strategies that align with 10 Point Professional Plan guidelines
- Classifies, categorizes and optimizes the number of dental offices contacted in the assigned territory
- Within territory influences dental practitioners and their staff to personally use, display and actively recommend Colgate products
- Continually reviews account lists and generates creative leads to increase account penetration directly or in collaboration with partner dental distributor representatives
- Develops and executes detailing plans for driving increased product usage, recommendations and sales within existing and new accounts
- Implements planned sales, marketing and promotional activities to ensure product purchase for in-office usage of Colgate brands dental practitioners in territory
- Leverages distributor salespeople to maximize face to face contact with visited and non-visited accounts
- Works closely with dental distributors, dental depots and pharmaceutical brokers, if required, to ensure that product orders are complete, accurate and are delivered on time to ensure “best in class” customer service reputation for Colgate
- Updates relevant Customer Relationship Management databases with relevant account contact information, product detailing activity, brand usage and brand recommendation preference information and feedback. Responsible for maintaining customer records in a computerized database
- Probes and uses insights to better understand practitioner/account needs
- Understands competitor products weaknesses and ethically convinces and converts the account to Colgate technologies for better patient treatment outcomes
- Conducts structured “lunch-n-learn” detailing sessions and product training seminars
- Participates in dental distributor/depot sales meetings to introduce new product science and technology and to communicate Colgate marketing plans and account growth strategies
- Represents Colgate at dental conventions, professional association meetings and creatively develops and expands professional networking opportunities
- Seeks answers to detailed professional questions about products and the scientific literature from product development or scientific affairs
For Senior Detailers and Executive Detailers only
- Provides training to new detailers and dental distributor salespeople
- Becomes mentors to new detailers, ensuring effective knowledge transfer and efficient competency development
- Takes on a higher level of responsibility for driving sales, influencing product usage and recommendations with important accounts
- Becomes highly respected by dental accounts based on relationships, experience, credibility and scientific knowledge of preventive dentistry and Colgate product technologies
- Becomes the central contact for dental practitioners who require advice on the effective treatment therapies for caries, sensitivity and periodontitis
- Improves partner dental distributors sales personnel in all functions through intensive product training, assisting to make specific product sales, developing new account business and generally contributing to the effectiveness of their sales efforts
- Computes journey plan for the whole quarter and updates weekly
Oral Care Science and Brand Knowledge
- Has the understanding to speak informatively about Colgate products – active ingredients, clinical support, product usage, features and benefits and knows the related scientific literature
- Expresses scientific content into understandable messages tailored to the professional’s level of understanding
- Uses technical and scientific dental terminologies and language
- Translates science and technology into practical, relevant health care information that captures the professional’s attention
- Is proactive in acquiring knowledge of Colgate’s technology and products
Professional, Consumer and Competitive Insight
- Reports all competitive information discovered in accordance with M5PWEI principles and initiates actions for addressing them
- Shows an intellectual curiosity about what brands professionals consider for use and how they become a recommender of a Colgate or competitor’s brand
Required Qualifications (Education, Knowledge required, Language skills)
- A Bachelor's Degree, preferably in dental university degree or life science
- Minimum 1 year of field sales experience, preferably in an oral care, pharmaceutical or consumer goods company
- Experience working in oral health care a plus
