Purpose of Position: Coordinate lab activities and processes on a specific bench / in a specific section, ensure compliance with protocols, troubleshoot equipment or procedure issues, maintain efficient workflow, and maintain quality standards.
Requirements:
- HPCSA registration as Medical Technologist / Scientist (Required)
- Relevant Medical Technology or Medical Scientist qualification in Genetics or Cytogenetics (Required)
Required Experience:
- 3 or more years' experience as a Technologist or Scientist processing specimens according to established criteria and standards in a laboratory setting within a pathology environment.
- Advanced knowledge of protocols, procedures, and equipment relevant to the specific bench.
- Basic Excel and Outlook skills.
- Basic understanding of financial management principles (Cost awareness, inventory management and resource utilisation).
- Demonstrated ability to guide and influence teams without direct managerial responsibilities.
- General understanding of OSH Act.
- General understanding of people management practices (including training, motivating and directing employees) to optimise workplace productivity and promote professional growth.
- Knowledge of accreditation processes and procedures and familiarity with QMS principles and practices.
- Knowledge of HPCSA regulations.
- Knowledge of validation and verification processes.
- Strong communication skills to read, write, and speak fluently in English.
- Strong organisational skills to oversee workflow, manage tasks and allocate resources effectively.
- While formal management experience is not required, strong leadership potential, with the ability to inspire, guide and mentor technical teams is required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the Team Lead with driving a positive work environment and high-performing culture.
- Conduct or supervise validations and verifications of reagents, instruments, or new assays, including the development of new assays.
- Coordinate the lab activities of a specific bench or section within the lab.
- Ensure compliance with accreditation systems by maintaining the quality system.
- Evaluate and monitor instruments, reagents, and test costs to effectively control laboratory expenses.
- Facilitate knowledge sharing and skill development among team members.
- Identify process improvement opportunities for the specific bench and collaborate with the Team Lead to streamline processes to enhance service quality and cost efficiency.
- Monitor staff performance on the specific bench / section and collaborate closely with the Team Lead to evaluate performance and offer valuable insights.
- Oversee the workflow and overall functioning of the relevant bench or section to achieve operational objectives and uphold required turnaround time (TAT).
- Perform allocated bench work to meet workflow demands and deliver results promptly.
- Provide training, guidance and expertise as a technical mentor to enhance the team’s performance and development.
