The role of the Environmental Officer will be to monitor legal compliance on site, audit against licence conditions, and develop procedures and systems to ensure legal compliance. Coach and support managers on environmental standards and advise on where corrective actions are needed with regards to mitigating environmental risks.
Responsibilities:
- Assisting in ensuring compliance with regulations pertaining to environmental management.
- Support in the identification, analysis, and evaluation of environmental risks to contractors and line managers and provide recommendations regarding licence condition requirements.
- Monitor Permits Conditions, Reporting conditions, and other Requirements and ensure procedures and systems are in place to address conditions and requirements.
- Arrange and review 3rd party compliance audits and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure mitigation of environmental risk through coaching and developing standards.
- Assist in the development and management of environmental systems.
- Conduct environmental awareness to keep employees informed about hazards.
- Ensure all reporting/submissions are done to regulatory bodies.
- Conduct routine environmental inspections to monitor compliance on site.
- Review and ensure that contractors' HSE files remain up to date.
- Conduct environmental incident investigations.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Grade 12
- B Tech Environmental Management
- Project Management
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 3 years environmental management experience.
- Integrated Risk Management: Proactively identifies people, processes, mining environment, and system factors that have the potential to create risk and harm.
- Sound knowledge of relevant legislation, mine standards, and procedures (Auditors/ISO45001/ISO 14001/9001).
- Investigation, baseline assessments, and risk management (Impact & Aspect Registers).
- Assurance: Applies audit processes and activities to analyze data in order to identify and escalate risks.
- Performance reporting: Ensures effective monitoring of performance data within own area and applies data analysis to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Mining and Process Operations: Understands key operational processes and the impact of S/H/E practices on mining production.
- Creating sustainable business: Promotes the value of sustainable practice. Proactively contributes to sustainable development activities that add value to the business.
- Managing Environmental Risks: Understands environmental resources, risks, and opportunities and applies this knowledge to pre-empt and manage issues and to create solutions.
Other Requirements:
- Clear understanding of Environmental Legislation.
- General administration and organization skills.
- ISO 9001, 14001, and ISO 45001 Implementation & Auditors certificates.
- Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Project Management.
- Environmental law for Environmental Managers.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
- Computer literacy and system knowledge: MS Office (Basic).
- SHERQ.
- Working knowledge and skills of SHERQ policies, practices, and procedures; Integrated risk management and assessment.
- Policies and procedures: Working knowledge of all related company including IR, HC, and labour agreements.
