Global Remote Position: Remote, Africa - Candidate must be based in Africa
Operation Smile is dedicated to increasing access to high quality surgical and comprehensive care services in low and middle-income countries through a holistic set of education, training, and direct patient interventions. Increasing comprehensive care capacity for program countries and establishing a greater portfolio of speech and language pathology, psychosocial support, and nutrition intervention programs will support increasing complete care for patients and the ability to decrease patient barriers to receiving timely care.
Nutrition Program Manager, Nutrition specific responsibilities include:
Nutrition Program Manager will be responsible for implementing and advancing Operation Smile’s organizational nutrition statement and strategy, while supporting the development, provision, and monitoring of active nutrition programs in Operation Smile’s current and future program countries.
Nutrition Program Manager will serve as the focal point for program countries supporting the advancement and management of global tools for nutrition including Operation Smile standard nutrition guidance and resources, managing internal strategic initiatives, supporting quality monitoring and evaluation, and synthesizing data and lessons learned. Key objectives for this role are outlined below.
Key Objectives:
Program Implementation
- Monitoring of nutrition programs globally (field visits, regular program monitoring, budget forecast and follow up, reporting, etc.)
- Develop nutrition activity work plans and support the implementation of activities (Feeding Program Bootcamps, Integrated Nutrition Programs during missions, Center based nutrition programs).
- Manage Operation Smile’s Ready-to-Use-Therapeutic-Food program (RUTF)
- Work with in-country teams to design and expand nutrition programs, specific to Operation Smile Foundation needs and working within established infrastructure (e.g. Ministry of Health, National Office of Nutrition, Scale Up Nutrition Platform) with the purpose of training local teams, community health workers, midwives, nutrition volunteers, and patients on key nutrition topics.
- Mentor and work with local in-country teams to promote high quality nutrition implementation approaches.
- Conduct trainings on nutrition protocols, and supportive supervision activities at a country and/or regional level.
- Support development of specific country budgets and consolidated budgets for global nutritional expenditure
- Oversee Operation Smile Nutrition reporting procedures and support in-country teams in adhering to required practices.
- Enhance integration of nutrition activities with other key health programs and coordinate with local healthcare volunteers on establishing strong social and behavior change, communication, and outreach activities.
- Monitor international health system approaches and guidelines to ensure that Operation Smile’s nutrition programs work in parallel.
Nutrition Assessment Roll - Out
- Identify and develop the training solutions and pathways for each country onboarding to the Operation Smile Global Nutrition Assessment.
- Monitor the longitudinal tracking of patients through the Operation Smile Global Nutrition Assessment.
- Assist in country teams in monitoring and meeting targeted Key Performance Indicators, output and outcome indicators devised for their nutrition programs
Education & Training
- Lead the development of training modules to support social behavior change around nutrition.
- Support coordination of regional Nutrition conferences in conjunction with other team leads.
- Conduct communication with the Nutrition Council and other appointed advisors to develop educational resources on: Nutrition & Healthy Foods, WASH, breastfeeding techniques.
- Work closely with Global Medical Education Department and Medical Oversight Department on the peer review process for the Nutrition curriculum and identify opportunities for future curriculum development.
Advocacy & Communication
- Manage communications with the Operation Smile Nutrition Council to support the development of nutrition resources, tools, and Nutrition Volunteer position.
- Work closely with Partner countries and development team to identify corporate partners and sponsors to support the various nutrition programs.
- Work in conjunction with partner countries to produce proposals and grant requests to support nutrition programs globally.
- Organize and lead monthly regional nutrition calls with nutrition POC’s in every country.
- Oversee creation and dissemination of bi-monthly Nonsurgical newsletters to be sent out to all program countries.
- Support development of advocacy and communication tools on Nutrition programming to facilitate stakeholder engagement at the country, regional and global level.
- Prepare regular program/project updates and briefing notes for management and donors to keep them informed of nutrition program progress.
Requirements
Professional Qualifications
- Master’s level degree in nutrition, medicine, public health, or a related field highly preferred
- Experience working within health systems and at the population level in LMIC’s
- A minimum of 5 years of direct relevant experience in the implementation and management of international development projects, specifically, with combined experience in two or more technical areas such as: primary health care, maternal children and neonatal care, family planning, maternal, newborn, and child health (FP/MNCH), nutrition, and Water/Sanitation/Hygiene, and health systems strengthening.
- Demonstrated experience using REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) or similar data collection and management software in a research or clinical setting.
- Ability to create and manage data collection instruments, implement updates and adjustments to survey instruments, and perform data analysis.
- Project management experience and associated skills
- Experience with managing budgets, reports, key performance indicators, and other evaluation metrics.
- Fluency in English required, knowledge of foreign languages preferred
- Able to participate in frequent international travel of up to 20% time

- Commitment to the mission and vision of Operation Smile
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, especially with global teams
- Strong writing skills with experience assembling reports, proposals, and grants preferred
- Ability to work in resource constrained environments
- Academic degrees/certificates, research, programmatic experience, and interest in the area of nutrition
- Advanced computer skills, especially in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook)
- This is a remote position. Willingness to travel internationally to support global program implementation and training programs
