The Intermediate Life Support Paramedic provides essential medical care in emergency situations, offering a level of care that includes some advanced procedures but not the full spectrum of advanced life support. ILS Paramedics are equipped to handle a variety of emergency scenarios with a focus on stabilizing patients and ensuring safe transport to medical facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Emergency Response:
- Respond promptly to emergency calls, assessing and addressing patient needs in critical situations.
- Use medical knowledge and equipment to stabilize patients, including advanced procedures specific to ILS training.
Patient Care:
- Administer medications and treatments as per ILS protocols, such as certain types of intravenous fluids, and medications.
- Provide advanced airway management, including advanced techniques like bag-mask ventilation and, in some cases, advanced intubation.
Assessment and Monitoring:
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments to determine the severity of their condition and appropriate treatment.
- Monitor vital signs and adjust treatments as necessary to stabilize patients.
Transportation:
- Transport patients safely to medical facilities while continuing to provide necessary care and monitoring.
- Communicate with receiving facilities about the patient’s condition and treatments provided.
Equipment and Vehicle Maintenance:
- Ensure that medical equipment and supplies are in working order and properly stocked.
- Conduct routine checks and maintenance of emergency vehicles and equipment.
Documentation:
- Accurately document patient care, including assessment findings, treatments administered, and patient responses.
- Ensure documentation meets legal and organizational standards for record-keeping.
Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with other emergency medical personnel, including EMTs, advanced paramedics, and hospital staff.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive patient care.
Training and Development:
- Engage in ongoing education and training to maintain ILS certification and stay updated on medical protocols and advancements.
- Participate in drills and exercises to maintain skills and readiness.
