My client is in search of a General Manager (Executive) for their well-established global brand in the mining/engineering arena. They are specifically seeking individuals that can run with multiple projects into Africa as well as internationally.
Duties & Responsibilities
Role's Purpose:
As the General Manager for Africa in the mining sector, you will be responsible for overseeing all operational activities within the region. This executive will play a pivotal role in driving operational excellence, optimizing performance, and ensuring adherence to company policies and regulatory standards.
Experience & Qualification Criteria:
- Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Business Administration, Project Management or related field; advanced Degree (e.g., MBA) preferred.
- Proven 20 years’ experience in a senior leadership role within the mining industry, with a focus on operational management and strategy development.
- In-depth knowledge of mining operations, processes, technologies, and best practices.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex data to drive informed decision-making.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities, with a track record of inspiring and motivating teams to achieve goals and objectives.
- Sound understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations applicable to the mining sector in Africa.
- Willingness to travel extensively within the region and work in remote locations as required.
Primary Responsibilities: Strategic Planning and Execution: - Develop and implement strategic plans for mining operations in Africa, aligned with the company's overall objectives and growth targets.
- Evaluate market trends, industry dynamics, and geopolitical factors to identify opportunities and mitigate risks.
- Lead initiatives to improve operational efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and productivity across all mining sites.
Operational Leadership: - Provide leadership and direction to the operations team, including site managers, engineers, supervisors, and support staff.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement within the organization.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, and promote a zero-harm workplace environment.
Resource Management: - Manage resources effectively, including human capital, equipment, and supplies, to optimize operational performance and minimize downtime.
- Collaborate with procurement and supply chain teams to ensure timely delivery of materials and services required for mining operations.
- Implement best practices for equipment maintenance, asset utilization, and resource allocation.
Stakeholder Engagement: - Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government authorities, local communities, suppliers, and contractors.
- Address stakeholder concerns and maintain open channels of communication to foster trust and collaboration.
- Represent the company in negotiations, meetings, and forums related to mining operations in Africa.
Performance Monitoring and Reporting: - Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to track the progress of operational activities and initiatives.
- Conduct regular performance reviews, analyze data, and identify areas for improvement or corrective action.
- Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations for senior management, board of directors, and external stakeholders.
