*Job Purpose*
To function as an independent practitioner/clinical expert by virtue of their knowledge and experience. They will assist in leading and managing a team of staff as delegated by the Home Manager ensuring that all actions are conducted within the standards and framework provided by the NMC Code of Professional Conduct. To take management responsibility of the nursing home in the absence of the Home Manager
*Responsibilities*
* The post holder has no direct budgetary responsibility although they have a responsibility for the delivery of cost effective care.
* Has the responsibility for ensuring cost effective staff utilization in line with workload requirements. This may require the post holder to work on the floor during times of unexpected staff shortage to reduce the need for agency staff.
* Will be required to supervise qualified and unqualified staff on a day to day basis as delegated by the Home Manager.
*Main Duties*
*Legal & Ethical*
* Practice within the legal and ethical framework as detailed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Care Quality Commission, and national legislation to ensure the residents interests and well being are met.
* Empower residents to take responsibility for their health, well being and lifestyle by practising in an open and transparent manner ensuring residents and their families have the relevant information to participate in decisions and positive risk enablement in their care support.
* Act as an advocate to residents and have an awareness of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty legislation.
* Promote Health & Safety in the workplace and ensure a safe working environment for employees, residents and visitors.
* Ensure the safe management of medicines in accordance with NMC guidelines and legislation.
* Maintain open honest and transparent working relationships with regulators, GP’s and other appropriate outside agencies.
* Engage with all stakeholders including residents, relatives, employees, visitors and the local community.
*Professional*
* Ensure that a systematic and individualized approach to resident care is delivered and that appropriate documentation is completed and retained through audit and good quality training of staff.
* Develop, promote and maintain a high standard of care, implementing improvements in accordance with evidence-based practice. Have an active involvement in the reviewing and development of new policies and procedures.
* Ensure that clients care plans are completed and maintained in conjunction with clients, relatives and other healthcare professionals and in accordance with NMC guidelines and company policy.
* Take responsibility for personal continuing professional development in order to enhance knowledge and skills and keep knowledge current.
* Maintain a record of professional development.
* Maintain professional registration with the NMC.
* Take part in all mandatory training sessions provided by St. Benedict’s Nursing Home Ltd or outside agencies as detailed by the Home Manager.
*Leadership & Management*
· Demonstrate effective time management skills.
· Ensures effective running day to day of the home in liaison with and in the absence of, the Home Manager.
· Participates in the ‘on-call’ duty rota for senior staff members.
· Complete or delegate to an appropriate individual the management of the 4 weekly rota which must be passed to the Home Manager for approval and authorization of agency usage.
· Take account of the role, skills and competence of staff when delegating work.
· Be a role model for the team by representing the values and beliefs of the nursing profession as well as that of St. Benedict’s Nursing Home
· Provide encouragement, guidance, and motivation to all nurses and care assistants throughout the home.
· Undertake training of staff as required by the home, and support Health Care Assistants care certificate training by observational practice and feedback
· Participate in the recruitment and selection process.
· Undertake pre assessment of residents, recording this on PCS, and preparing staff for the arrival of new residents.
· Take part in the supervision process and undertake supervision with nurses and care assistants as detailed by the Home Manager. Feedback for junior staff regarding performance should be given directly and sensitively in a timely manner whether the issue is positive or otherwise. Referral to the Home Manager may be required to explore options for individual staff improvement and growth.
· Undertake supervision and appraisal of nursing and care staff, as per company guidelines.
· Monitor staff sickness and absence and pass completed notification reports to the Home Manager in a timely fashion.
· Co-ordinate annual leave requests and discuss with the Home Manager for approval in order to promote satisfactory workforce planning.
· Ensure that you and all staff in the home are well presented in accordance to uniform policy, at all times with name badges displayed.
· Take part in investigations and disciplinary matters as detailed by the Home Manager.
*Record Keeping*
* Ensure that factual accounts are made in the residents’ notes on a daily basis.
* All entries must be signed, name printed and dated.
* Take part in the audit processes within the home e.g. for care plans, resident weight trends, and medications as detailed by the Home Manager.
* Report any defects in equipment to the Home Manager and ensure any affected equipment is removed from service and labelled as out of order together with the date.
*Communication*
* Take part in resident reviews with District Nurses, CHC team, CCG, and Social Workers. This may be at face to face meetings, or via telephone or video call.
* Maintain good communications with family members or relatives representatives.
* Report on a regular basis to the Home Manager.
* Log all enquiries on the form provided to be passed to the Home Manager for follow up and discussion of suitability for the home.
* Support viewing of the home by potential residents or their representatives, in a professional manner, responding to questions appropriately.
* Promote a helpful and polite telephone manner in all staff when they take calls.
* Ensure good communication with all members of the management team.
*Nursing Duties*
* As a registered nurse you will be expected to provide holistic, person centred nursing care and initiate writing a plan that takes in account lifestyle, gender and cultural background.
* Take part in the pre-assessment of prospective residents in a home, community, care home or hospital setting. This should be undertaken in the safest way that reflects most recent IPC guidance, using appropriate technologies
* Ensure all residents have a named nurse and key worker delegating care plans in an effective manner in line with the amount of shifts undertaken by any individual.
* Carry out intimate or personal care as and when a need arises.
* Administer medications in a safe and effective manner in line with legislation.
* Complete a shift plan to identify the responsibilities of all nursing and care staff throughout the shift.
* Take part in handover and ensure that information is passed to the appropriate staff members.
* Provide support, empathy and reassurance in the delivery of care.
* Support junior staff members to develop their confidence and knowledge in career development.
* Address inappropriate behavior in others in a professional manner.
* Take part in the breaking of bad news to both relatives and residents and show compassion and sensitivity in these circumstances.
* Maintain own professional knowledge in line with current best practice in areas of clinical practice appropriate to the needs of the residents.
* Maintain high standards of cleanliness and infection control and promote hand washing and the use of universal precautions.
*General*
* Adhere to all appropriate NMC guidelines and regulations.
* Maintain all logbooks and records as required by both the Registering Authority and the Directors of the Company.
* Ensure that all information of a confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties.
* Assist in the arrangements for fundraising.
* Notify the Home Manager or Person in Charge as soon as possible of your inability to report for duty and also on your return to work from all periods of absence.
* Ensure the security of the Nursing Home is maintained at all times.
* Adhere to all company policies and procedures within the defined timescales.
* Ensure all equipment is clean and well maintained.
* Carry out any other tasks that may be reasonably assigned to you.
