HEALTH & SAFETY ADVISOR
South of England
Ideally within 1.5 hours of the M40 Corridor
Up to £60,000 + £6,825 Car Allowance + Bonus + Benefits
This is a Health & Safety role embedded in live project delivery, from conventional BMS installations through to wider projects involving subcontracted electrical, mechanical and other specialist packages. You’ll be involved before work starts, establishing the H&S arrangements, Construction Phase Plans and site induction processes. You’ll assess third-party arrangements, identify gaps and put appropriate policies and procedures in place. Your involvement then continues throughout delivery, returning to sites to inspect, audit and verify that both internal teams and subcontractors are working to the standards established at mobilisation. This is a site-led role across the South, ideally suited to someone with access to the M40 corridor.
WHAT YOU'LL ACTUALLY BE DOING AND WHY IT MATTERS
You’ll support projects from pre-construction and mobilisation through live delivery to completion and H&S file handover. The project mix is important. On conventional BMS projects, you’ll work with Project Managers and engineers to make sure CDM responsibilities, RAMS, site arrangements and working practices are appropriate for the controls installation. On broader projects, the business may be coordinating delivery across subcontracted electrical, mechanical and other specialist packages. Your responsibility therefore extends into the H&S management of the wider supply chain. You’ll review contractor arrangements, support the development of Construction Phase Plans, establish site induction processes and identify where additional policies, procedures or controls are required. Once work begins, you’ll undertake inspections and audits throughout the project lifecycle, provide pragmatic H&S advice and make sure agreed actions are implemented rather than simply recorded.
WHY THIS ROLE COULD BE BETTER
The difference here is the breadth of construction and project-delivery exposure. You could be supporting a conventional BMS installation on one project and a broader multi-discipline programme involving M&E contractors and other specialist packages on another. That gives you experience across:
• BMS, electrical, MEP and wider building-services project environments
• CDM, Construction Phase Planning and project mobilisation
• Third-party H&S, contractor assurance and supply-chain management It also gives you involvement throughout the lifecycle. Rather than arriving periodically to conduct an audit, you’ll help determine how projects are established, identify weaknesses in existing arrangements and then return during delivery to make sure those controls are working in practice.
ESSENTIALS
You’ll need established construction Health & Safety experience, ideally gained within electrical, MEP, building services or another relevant technical contracting environment. You’ll need a NEBOSH Level 6 qualification or equivalent, together with strong practical knowledge of CDM and the Building Safety Act. Experience of Construction Phase Planning is particularly important, as is the ability to assess and manage H&S arrangements involving subcontractors and third-party delivery teams.
You’ll also need:
• CSCS Safety Professional card
• Understanding of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems
• At least three years’ experience in a similar Health & Safety position You must be comfortable dealing with customers, Project Managers, engineers, site operatives and third-party contractors and be able to challenge arrangements constructively when standards need to improve.
THE CHALLENGES This is not predominantly a work-from-home role. The working pattern will follow project requirements. There may be periods with significant site activity and little or no home working, while at other stages documentation and project demands may allow more time away from site. You should therefore expect substantial site presence and travel across the South. Access to the M40 corridor would be particularly useful given the territory. Managing Health & Safety through subcontractors also requires a different level of oversight. You’ll need to assess whether third-party arrangements are adequate, address shortcomings before or during delivery and revisit sites to verify that agreed procedures are actually being followed.
YOUR DEVELOPMENT
The breadth of the project portfolio gives you the opportunity to extend your experience beyond conventional site H&S. You’ll work across the complete project lifecycle, including pre-construction consultation, CDM, Construction Phase Planning, mobilisation, contractor management, site inspections and audits, project delivery and H&S file handover. The increasing involvement of M&E and other subcontracted work packages also provides useful exposure to more complex supply-chain and multi-discipline project environments. For someone coming from electrical, MEP or building-services construction, it’s an opportunity to develop broader HSEQ capability while remaining closely involved with the realities of technical project delivery.
