Supporting cutting-edge lithium-ion battery R&D, this contract role offers the chance to join the Advanced Characterisation team of a leading battery organisation. As the Characterisation Scientist, you will carry out routine and advanced analytical testing on battery materials, electrodes, electrolytes and cell components, delivering high-quality data that informs material selection, process development and cell performance across LFP and NMC chemistries.
The Characterisation Scientist will be responsible for:
Conducting analytical testing using techniques such as BET, PSD, Karl Fischer, titration, TGA/DSC, FTIR, ICP-OES and XRF
Preparing powders, electrodes, electrolytes and other samples for analysis
Processing and interpreting data, producing clear reports and presenting findings to project teams
Operating, maintaining and troubleshooting analytical instrumentation
Supporting the development and optimisation of new analytical methods
Writing and updating SOPs and maintaining accurate laboratory records
Working safely in line with COSHH, risk assessments and EHS procedures
The Characterisation Scientist will have:
A degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Electrochemistry or a related discipline
At least two years' experience in an analytical, battery R&D or advanced materials laboratory, or equivalent practical experience
Hands-on experience with characterisation techniques such as particle sizing, BET, thermal analysis, spectroscopy and titration
Strong data analysis and interpretation skills
Experience working to SOPs while maintaining data quality and lab compliance
Good written and verbal communication skills
Experience with lithium-ion battery materials, LFP or NMC chemistries would be advantageous
