Housing Standards Officer
Location: Westminster, London
Contract: 6 Months (with the possibility of extension)
Working Pattern: Full-Time
Aatom Recruitment are currently recruiting for a Housing Standards Officer on behalf of a local authoirty.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the councils Environmental Health Service within the Public Protection and Licensing Directorate, helping to ensure that residents living within the private rented sector have access to safe, healthy, and well-managed homes.
We are seeking an experienced Housing Standards or Housing Enforcement professional who is passionate about improving housing conditions and delivering positive outcomes for residents across Westminster.
Key Responsibilities

Respond to complaints relating to housing conditions and residential properties.

Undertake inspections of private sector residential accommodation.

Assess housing conditions and identify hazards using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS).

Prepare schedules of works, notices, reports, and recommendations.

Investigate housing standards concerns and take appropriate action to secure compliance.

Work proactively with landlords, tenants, managing agents, and other stakeholders.

Support the delivery of both reactive and proactive inspection programmes.

Maintain accurate records, evidence, and case management information.

Promote public health and wellbeing through effective regulation and enforcement.

Deliver high-quality customer service to residents and stakeholders.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have previous experience working within Housing Standards, Housing Enforcement, Private Sector Housing, Environmental Health, or a similar regulatory environment.
You will possess excellent communication skills and be confident dealing with residents, landlords, elected members, and other stakeholders while managing a varied caseload.
Essential Requirements

Experience working within a Housing Standards, Housing Enforcement, Private Sector Housing, or similar role.

Experience investigating complaints from residents, stakeholders, and elected members.

Experience providing customer-facing services, including supporting vulnerable residents.

Knowledge of relevant housing legislation and regulatory requirements.

Experience undertaking property inspections and assessing housing conditions.

Understanding and practical application of the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS).

Strong written communication and report-writing skills.

Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.

Ability to work independently and escalate issues where appropriate.

Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office packages.

Experience using mobile technology or handheld devices in a field-based environment.
Desired Skills & Experience
Knowledge of Housing Act 2004.
Experience drafting notices and enforcement documentation.
Experience working within a local authority housing or environmental health setting.
Experience working with landlords and tenants to achieve compliance through engagement and enforcement.

Working Arrangements
This role operates on an agile basis and will involve regular inspections, site visits, and stakeholder engagement activities across Westminster. Occasional evening or out-of-hours working may be required to meet service needs.
