Role Overview
Our client is looking to recruit an experienced Welder / Fettler to join their production team in Sheffield.
This is a hands-on role within a specialist metals and castings environment, working on components ranging from relatively small castings through to large-scale items weighing several tonnes.
The successful candidate will ideally come from a background in castings, foundry, heavy engineering, precision engineering or specialist metal manufacturing, with practical welding and fettling experience.
Key Responsibilities
Welding and repair of metal castings and fabricated components.
Carrying out MIG, TIG and/or STICK welding, depending on the component and application.
Fettling, grinding and finishing cast components to the required standard.
Removing excess material, welds, flash and surface imperfections.
Preparing components prior to welding and finishing.
Working with castings ranging in size from kilograms through to several tonnes.
Inspecting completed work and ensuring it meets required quality standards.
Reading and following relevant production instructions, drawings and specifications.
Using hand tools, grinders and other workshop equipment safely and effectively.
Working closely with production, quality and other members of the manufacturing team.
Maintaining a safe, clean and organised working environment.
Experience Required
Candidates should ideally have experience within one or more of the following environments:
Foundry or castings
Steel or metals manufacturing
Heavy engineering
Precision engineering
Fabrication
Specialist manufacturingYou should have practical experience of welding using MIG, TIG and/or STICK techniques.
Previous fettling experience is highly desirable, although candidates from relevant castings and heavy-engineering backgrounds may already have gained this as part of their previous roles.
Experience working with metal castings would be particularly advantageous.
Welding Processes
MIG – Metal Inert Gas welding
A wire-fed welding process commonly used for fabrication and production work. Generally quicker and well suited to larger volumes of welding.
TIG – Tungsten Inert Gas welding
A more precise welding process often used where appearance, control and weld quality are particularly important.
STICK – Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
Uses a flux-coated consumable electrode or “stick”. It is widely used within heavy engineering, structural work, repair and thicker materials because of its versatility and robustness.

You will ideally be:
Experienced in a heavy industrial or metalworking environment.
Comfortable working with components of very different sizes and weights.
Practical and confident using welding, grinding and fettling equipment.
Quality-focused with good attention to detail.
Safety-conscious and comfortable working within a busy production environment.
Reliable and able to work effectively as part of a manufacturing team.
