The Opportunity
As a General Cover Teacher, you will play a vital role in ensuring students remain focused and engaged during the absence of their usual class teacher. Working across a variety of subjects and year groups, you will confidently lead lessons, support learning objectives, and maintain a positive and productive classroom environment.
With assignments available on a day-to-day, short-term and longer-term basis, this position provides excellent flexibility while allowing you to broaden your experience across different educational settings.
Main Duties
Take responsibility for delivering lesson content in the absence of the regular teacher.
Maintain high standards of classroom management and student engagement.
Encourage positive behaviour and uphold school expectations at all times.
Support students in completing classwork and achieving lesson objectives.
Create a calm, structured, and inclusive learning environment.
Monitor student participation and provide feedback to teaching staff where required.
Respond effectively to varying classroom situations and individual learning needs.
Follow safeguarding and health and safety procedures in line with school policies.
Establish positive working relationships with students, teachers, and support staff.
Adapt quickly to different subjects, classrooms, and school environments.
Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will possess:
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), QTLS, PGCE, or equivalent teaching qualification, although experienced Cover Supervisors are encouraged to apply.
Previous experience working within UK secondary education.
Strong classroom presence and effective behaviour management skills.
Excellent communication and organisational abilities.
Confidence teaching a variety of subjects across Key Stages 3 and 4.
A flexible and professional approach to work.
The ability to build rapport quickly with both pupils and staff.
Strong adaptability and resilience within fast-paced school environments.
A genuine commitment to supporting student achievement and wellbeing.
An enhanced DBS certificate on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one.
