Role Overview
A Scrutiny Officer supports elected members in reviewing and challenging local authority policies, services and decisions to improve performance, accountability and outcomes for residents. The role involves research, analysis, project coordination and providing impartial advice to scrutiny committees and councillors.
Key Responsibilities

Support scrutiny committees – Coordinate meetings, agendas, reports and work programmes for elected members.

Research and analysis – Investigate policies, services and performance data to support evidence-based scrutiny.

Provide impartial advice – Advise councillors on scrutiny processes, governance requirements and effective questioning.

Coordinate reviews and investigations – Manage scrutiny reviews, gather evidence and engage with officers, partners and stakeholders.

Produce reports and recommendations – Draft clear reports identifying findings, recommendations and opportunities for service improvement.
