Assistant Accountant (6-Month FTC)
Location: Herefordshire – Hybrid working (office-based with flexibility)
Salary: £28,000–£32,000
Contract: Fixed-term until 31st July 2026

Our client, a leading public sector organisation, is hiring an Assistant Accountant on a 6-month fixed-term contract to provide a full accountancy service across allocated service areas.
This role offers the opportunity to play a key part in budget monitoring, forecasting and financial reporting, supporting operational and strategic decision-making during a critical financial period.
What you’ll do
Deliver comprehensive budget monitoring, forecasting and financial analysis
Lead regular budget meetings and present clear, evidence-based financial reports
Produce detailed narrative reports, graphs and variance analysis
Support the annual budget process and year-end procedures
Complete reconciliations, grant claims, financial returns and audit working papers
You’ll work closely with finance colleagues, Heads of Service and budget holders, providing both financial insight and constructive challenge to ensure accurate forecasting and strong financial control.
What we’re looking for
Experience within management accounts or budget monitoring
Strong analytical capability with the ability to interpret financial data clearly
Experience producing forecasts, variance analysis and management reports
Confidence leading meetings and working with non-finance stakeholders
Strong Excel skills and familiarity with financial systems
The ideal candidate will bring attention to detail, credibility with stakeholders, and the ability to work independently within a collaborative finance team.
