Carmichael UK is recruiting an experienced Assistant Design Manager to support delivery on a major HS2 infrastructure package based in Buckinghamshire.
This is a freelance opportunity to join a high-performing design and delivery team on one of the UK’s most significant rail infrastructure programmes, working across complex civil engineering works.
The Role
As Assistant Design Manager, you will support the coordination, management, and assurance of permanent works design, working closely with designers, construction teams, and client stakeholders.
You will be involved in readiness review meetings, DDRs and IDRs within your area of responsibility, coordinating the delivery of typical sections, standard detail drawings, and supporting design documentation.
The role will include day-to-day coordination of design activities, including verification, technical reviews, and interdisciplinary checks. You will also manage third-party design reviews, including Cat 3 checks, and work closely with construction teams to ensure designs are buildable and aligned with the construction programme.
Key Responsibilities
Supporting and coordinating design delivery across allocated work packages
Managing DDRs, IDRs, and readiness reviews
Coordinating design assurance activities, including verification and technical review
Liaising with Cat 3 checkers and third-party reviewers
Ensuring designs are buildable and aligned with construction sequencing
Managing technical and commercial communications (TQs, EWs, EIs, CEs) via CEMAR
Coordinating with interfacing organisations and HS2 technical teams
Maintaining technical registers, including assumptions and departures
Supporting MIDP technical deliverables and attending client, designer, and JV meetings
About You
Degree-qualified in Civil Engineering or Construction Management
Experience in a similar Assistant Design Manager or design coordination role
Background in major civil engineering or infrastructure projects
Strong understanding of design assurance and technical governance processes
Confident using MS Office and managing multiple workstreams
Strong communication skills and ability to build effective working relationships
Understanding of HS2 Act requirements or similar major project frameworks (preferred)
