Role: Assistant Accountant

Job Type: Contract (12 months)
Day Rate: £210 - £230 per day (inside IR35)
Role Purpose
We are working with a client who is strengthening their finance function and require an Assistant Accountant on an interim basis to support performance reporting, analysis, and business partnering across the organisation. This is a high-profile role that will provide exposure to operational teams, senior stakeholders, and key financial processes.
The Assistant Accountant will play an important role in supporting the delivery of accurate management information, driving performance improvements, and providing insightful analysis to aid decision-making. You will work closely with a supportive finance team while partnering with the wider business to improve financial processes and reporting.
Key Responsibilities for the Role:
- Understand and contribute to Performance Packs in Power BI, using key metrics to support performance improvements across the business.
- Process and analyse large volumes of data, demonstrating a willingness to learn new systems and tools.
- Support the accurate and timely production of monthly management accounts on a true and fair basis, including posting accruals, prepayments, and other journals.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and support the implementation of changes where appropriate.
- Prepare accurate and timely data analysis to support the Capital Programme & Procurement Management Accounts pack and Operational Performance Reports.
- Participate in cross-business reviews to analyse cost data, understand variances, and assess cause-and-effect relationships.
- Document current business processes, identifying hotspots and working with stakeholders to improve controls and efficiency.
- Assist in the preparation of budgets and forecasts, working closely with key stakeholders.
- Conduct ad hoc financial analysis and support special projects as required.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders across the business, including senior teams.
- Attend operational reviews at other UK locations as required.
What we are looking for:
- Part-qualified accountant (CIMA/ACCA/ACA) or actively studying towards an accounting qualification.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data and explain it clearly to non-finance colleagues.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to engage with senior stakeholders.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting and analysis.
- Ability to work independently, prioritise effectively, and perform in a fast-paced environment.
- A proactive and committed team player who is willing to go the extra mile to support colleagues.
- Strong Excel skills, including PivotTables, SUMIFs, and XLOOKUPs, with an ability to streamline and automate processes.
- Understanding of accounting principles, particularly around accruals, prepayments, and Capex projects.
- Experience with Power BI, Power Query, SQL, or other analytical tools is desirable.
- Experience in a regulated industry or project delivery environment is advantageous but not essential.
