A Brief Overview
Provides care in a medical practice office or clinic under the direction of a provider. Maintains a clean and safe environment, provides patient care, and provides patients with information. Provides mentoring for Level I Medical Assistants in the same physician office. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in The Methodist Mission, Vision, and Values.
What You Will Do
- Proactively assists patients throughout the visit as needed, accompanies patients to the exam/procedure room. Responds to patient needs in a professional and friendly manner.
- Performs clerical activities related to patient care such as scheduling appointments and Diagnostic Imaging exams, lab call backs, prior authorizations, retrieving medical histories, filling out patient paperwork and forms, and answering and returning phone calls.
- Collects and records patient data including height, weight, temperature, pulse, respiration rate, and blood pressure, and basic information about the presenting and previous conditions. Records pertinent patient information, surgical history, reviews systems, past medical history, social history, medical management including but not limited to allergies, etc.
- May assist with physical examination preparations.
- Performs EKGs, removes sutures/staples, and changes sterile and non-sterile dressings as directed.
- Effectively collects and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis utilizing non-invasive techniques, including urine, sputum, and stool. Assists with undressing, cleansing, and positioning patients for specific procedures.
- Perform skin tests and venipuncture of skin for the purpose of withdrawing blood.
- Administers medication and immunizations under the direction of the physician or advanced practice provider.
- May authorize prescription refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies ordered and authorized by a physician or advanced practice provider.
- Administers first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an emergency.
- Prepares and cleans exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control. Ensures instruments are cleaned and sterilized and contaminated supplies are properly disposed of.
- Prepares orders, sorts, stores, and restocks supplies for the exam/procedure room. Duties may include ordering and maintaining stock of supplies.
- Provides patient education and instructions under the authorization of the supervising physician.
- Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
Education Qualifications - High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Technical Degree or Diploma in Medical Assisting
Experience Qualifications - 3-5 years as a Medical Assistant or similar
- Completion of an accredited medical assisting program may substitute for one year of experience.
Skills And Abilities - Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work with patients, patient families, and physicians in a tactful and professional manner.
- Satisfactorily completes applicable competency assessments and skills checklist for Level 2; demonstrates proficiency in all measured areas.
- Ability to begin the patient visit with eye contact, smile, and greeting while using the patient’s name.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Successful completion of assigned training and development programs for the role within the mandated time frame.
- Performs computer skills demonstrated by successful navigation of the EMR with appropriate documentation. Demonstrates ability to review computer reports following evidence-based guidelines.
- Demonstrated proficiency in motivational interviewing and teach-back method techniques.
- Ability to act quickly in emergency situations.

Supervision Provided by this Position - There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this position.
Physical Demands - The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
- Must have good balance and coordination.
- The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
- The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
- Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
- Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
