We are looking for a Safety Officer (Ogihara South Africa) M/F based in South Africa .
Background
Ogihara Corporation manufactures die-press automotive body parts and assemblies. The Company produces products out of high-strength steel and aluminum, and tool-and-die assemblies primarily for the automotive industry.
Job Purpose
The Health and Safety Officer will coordinate health and safety functions in the organization. This includes the identification of hazards and the assessment of risks, putting appropriate safety controls in place, and providing advice on accident prevention and occupational health. The Safety Officer will also ensure compliance with all relevant legislation regarding all workplace activities and the use of plant, equipment, and substances. The role has a strong focus on training, continuous knowledge sharing, and building a safety culture in collaboration with all stakeholders on the shop floor.
Minimum Qualification
- Relevant National Diploma or NEBOSH Certificate
- HIRA (Hazard Identification Risk Assessment) knowledge and training
- Incident Investigation – working knowledge and training
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- ISO 14001 and ISO 45001
Preferred Qualification
- Degree in Safety Management or NEBOSH Diploma
Experience
- 3 – 5 years relevant experience in environmental and safety management, preferably in Automotive Manufacturing or Manufacturing
- Sound working knowledge of safety and environmental legislation (OHS Act 85 of 1993 and eThekwini By-Laws, current occupational health and safety procedures, policies, and standards).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Implement global and national safety standards.
- Build awareness through ongoing communication and knowledge sharing to encourage healthier, safer working practices.
- Conduct safety patrols and report on findings (ideally at least 80% of time to be spent on the shop floor). This includes ensuring:
- A safety-first, environmentally compliant environment in line with ISO 14001 (2015)
- Conducting risk assessments for all processes
- SOPs are followed and STOP CALL WAIT is adhered to for any abnormal or non-standard operations
- All machines are in safe working condition and that maintenance schedules are followed
- Daily activities on the shop floor align with safe working methods and SOPs
- Correct PPE is used
- Contractors have relevant permits and that they adhere to safety specifications and 37.2 agreements
- Ensure legal appointments are in place, valid, and understood.
- Chair the monthly Health and Safety committee meeting.
- Support with the company’s ISO 14001 EMS, internal auditing, and management and diagnostic reviews.
- Conduct morning toolbox talks and safety briefs
- Work with relevant managers to ensure all facilities are in good working order, including working with Maintenance to highlight problems and ensure resolution.
- Execute the Safety Training and Development Plan, including coordinating outsourced training providers.
- Train and induct new starters and emergency/unscheduled contractors prior to them coming on site.
- Present training and simulations.
Technical Prerequisites
- Good working knowledge of safety and environmental legislation (OHS Act 85 of 1993 and National Environmental Management Act), current occupational health and safety procedures, policies, and standards and NOSA safety systems
- Working knowledge of ISO 14001 (2015) and ISO 45001 (2018) standards
- Good working knowledge of Workman’s Compensation/COID Act
- Proficiency in all technical/operational aspects of safety management to be able to do root cause analysis and accident investigation
- Administration and reporting skills
- Relevant systems knowledge, including MS Office
