Operational Execution:
Ensuring health and safety legal compliance:
- Ensure employees on site comply with Safety, Health, and Environmental legislation.
- Coach employees on applicable Safety, Health, and Environmental legislation.
Ensuring the company meets health and safety targets:
- Communicate and promote company health and safety targets in your area of responsibility.
Coordinating the implementation of training interventions and health and safety and environmental awareness programmes:
- Communicate health and safety instructions with employees in your area of responsibility.
- Communicate and promote safety and environmental awareness programmes and campaigns.
- Assist with training interventions.
Enforcing health and safety and environmental standards and regulations:
- Ensure employees comply with safe operating procedures and any other safety standards.
- Coach employees on operating procedures.
- Stop and report employees that do not comply with safe operating procedures.
Conducting safety inspections and audits:
- Conduct legal and scheduled inspections on equipment, working places, and TMM in your area of responsibility.
- Complete daily logbook (inspection report) after inspections and issue report to the responsible persons as per submission arrangements.
- Report deviations and non-compliance to the immediate responsible supervisor.
- Follow-up and ensure deviations are closed out.
- Conduct monthly audit in area of responsibility and issue report to the Chief Safety Officer.
Inspect safety equipment:
- Ensure safety equipment is inspected, tagged, and certified.
- Coach employees in the correct use of safety equipment.
Drafting and implementing Safety Operating Procedures:
- Facilitate the drafting and review of safe operating procedures where required.
- Ensure safe operating procedures have been communicated with employees and declaration of understandings have been completed.
Investigating and compiling incident reports:
- Ensure all accidents and incidents are reported to the Chief Safety Officer as soon as practicable, and not later than the end of the shift; reports must be verbal and in writing.
- Investigate all health and safety incidents in your area of responsibility and complete all required reports in time.
- Verify corrective action implementation in the workplace and report back to Chief Safety Officer before investigation report sign off.
Advising management on health and safety matters:
- Continuously identify health and safety hazards and risks in your area of responsibility or any other area of the project and give advice to management on the effective mitigation of risks identified.
Drafting, implementing, and coordinating risk assessments:
- Facilitate the development of issue-based risk assessments and/or method statements and ensure the approval thereof.
- Ensure issue-based risk assessments and/or method statements have been communicated with employees and declaration of understandings have been completed.
- Review the quality of continuous risk assessments (HIRA).
- Coach employees on quality of continuous risk assessments.
- Encourage the use of SLAM individual risk assessments.
Planned Task Observation (PTO):
- Coach Foreman and Supervisors on how to complete quality PTOs.
- Assist supervisors to complete a PTO schedule.
- Monitor PTO schedule and inform Chief Safety Officer of major deviations.
- Assess PTOs and identify PTO findings observed and issue a report to the Chief Safety Officer.
Training of Employees:
- Verify that employees are trained and authorized according to their job specification.
- Notify the Chief Safety Officer should it become evident that training is lacking to ensure safe work.
Attending relevant meetings:
- Attend any meeting that is scheduled by the Chief Safety Officer or Management.
Enforcing discipline in area of responsibility:
- Report any ill discipline that may compromise the health and safety of persons.
- Encourage a good safety culture in your area of responsibility through Visible Felt Leadership and Behaviour-Based safety principles.
Creating unity with your team members:
- Ensure employees in your area of responsibility acknowledge the health and safety programme and work together as a team to promote a culture of health and safety in the workplace.
- Have regular safety meetings with safety representatives.
Compiling safety statistics:
- Compile weekly safety statistics from inspecting findings and/or incidents and send reports on time to relevant persons and Chief Safety Officer.
Comply with group policies and procedures:
- Comply with policies and procedures that are part of internal safety management programmes and processes.
Communication:
- Liaising with workforce.
- Liaising with all departments.
- Liaising with external stakeholders.
General Administration:
- Completing relevant company documentation as required.
- Compiling and submitting reports as requested.
- Filing all working documents for audit purposes.
- Addressing relevant safety-related queries.
- Applicable electronic capturing platforms.
Formal Education:
- Grade 12 Certificate.
- COMSOC 1&2 or SAMTRAC Mining.
- Legal liability.
- National Diploma / Technical Degree or relevant qualification in Occupational Health and Safety.
- Recognized Engineering trade would be advantageous.
- Registration with a South African professional (SHE) institution would be advantageous.
- A supervisory qualification would be advantageous.
- ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and ISO 9001 audit training would be advantageous.
Experience:
- Minimum three (3) years relevant experience in daily SHE management in a Mining and Engineering Environment.
- Driver’s license (4 years’ experience).
- Breadth of exposure or experience across all aspects of occupational health, environment, hygiene, safety, and contractor management in the workplace.
- Understanding of legal and commercial issues that may be affected by your role.
- Incident analysis and recommendation for future programs.
- Planning & organising.
- Teamwork.
- Report Writing.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to work without supervision (self-driven).
- Computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Suite.
