Job Purpose
This position reflects the CPUT’s commitment to ensure that CPUT’s network infrastructure operates efficiently and securely, enabling the university to achieve its academic and operational goals. This role is central to providing reliable connectivity, maintaining data integrity, and supporting technological advancements across the institution.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a BTech in Information Technology or equivalent qualification.
- Certifications in CCNP or HCIP, ITIL, Prince 2 and COBIT.
- At least 5 years’ experience in CISCO and/or Huawei network (LAN, WAN and Wireless) deployment, configuration and support.
- Strong knowledge of network infrastructure, monitoring tools (SolarWinds, Prime Infrastructure, etc), switches, wireless controllers and wireless access points.
- Experience in project management and coordinating network upgrades and implementations.
- Familiarity with higher education IT environments is an advantage.
- Experience and understanding of people management.
Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities
Operational planning and Project Management
- Manage network-related projects from initiation to completion, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery.
- Collaborate with other IT teams to support new initiatives and integrate emerging technologies.
Network optimization, monitoring and management
- Supervise daily operations of the CPUT’s network, ensuring maximum uptime and performance.
- Plan, design and implement network upgrades, expansions and optimizations.
- Conduct regular network assessments and audits to improve efficiency and performance.
- Oversee configuration, installation and maintenance of network hardware and software.
Security and Compliance
- Coordinate with cybersecurity and network security teams to address vulnerabilities and ensure network resilience against cyber threats.
- Ensure adherence to security policies and compliance standards, protecting the network from unauthorized access and data breaches.
- Supervise and mentor a team of network engineers by providing guidance and professional development.
- Conduct regular performance reviews, set team objectives and monitor progress.
- Foster a collaborative team environment, promoting knowledge-sharing and best practices.
Incident and Problem Resolution
- Oversee the identification, troubleshooting and resolution of network issues and outages.
- Develop and enforce protocols for incident management, including escalation procedures.
- Analyze and document network incidents to reduce future occurrences.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of network configurations, changes, and procedures.
- Prepare and deliver regular reports on network performance, incidents and usage statistics.
- Provide insights and recommendations for continuous improvement to the network manager.
