Job Purpose
The Safety Engineer and Consultant for hydrogen technologies will work with the project team on managing and meeting the safety targets. You will ideally hold experience of working on hydrogen-related projects. You will have strong interpersonal skills as you will be required to influence and develop long-lasting relationships. You must have exceptional knowledge with regards to South African Regulations, Health and Safety Standards, guidance and undertake lead auditor training.
Responsibility and Authority (incl. applicable Budget Responsibility)
- Transferring knowledge of the South African Laws and Regulations into hydrogen-specific projects (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act Pressure Equipment Regulation)
- Design Review / Technical Due Diligence
- Preparation of HAZOP analysis
- Develop Process Flow Diagram (PFDs) and Utility Flow Diagrams (UFDs) being able to explain selected flow configuration
- Review of Commissioning Testing Plans
- Preparation of Guidelines / zone classification
- Calculation of equipment sizes including vessels, columns, heat exchanger requirements, and packaged equipment specifications
- Attendance and input at major reviews such as PFD/P&ID reviews, HAZOPs, and 3D model reviews.
- Representing the process engineering discipline and being able to explain process design questions to clients and other disciplines
- Development of alarm and trip setpoint and process safety time calculations
- Qualification as Green Hydrogen Auditor will be provided by the company.

Education and Experience
- A recognized bachelor's (or higher) degree in chemical engineering, science, electrical engineering, or similar from an accredited college or university
- A conceptual understanding of chemical engineering principles, hydrogen technologies, FMEA, and similar
- Excellent knowledge of technical theory, engineering principles, good engineering practices and how to apply them for design execution
- Familiarity with major regulations and industry codes and standards affecting standard design, quality, or processes
- Conversant in relief calculation methodologies and industry codes and standards applicable to pressure relief design.
- Knowledgeable in process design of equipment, including vessels, columns, heat exchangers and package process specifications for equipment and control valves.
- Specific experience in planning and executing greenfield or brownfield projects in one or more of the following market segments:
- Knowledge of hydrogen technologies along the value chain from hydrogen production, storage, distribution, transportation, and end usage
- Natural gas processing including liquefaction and regasification
- Coal, gas or biomass to chemicals such as methanol and ammonia
- Solar and/or combined cycle power plants
- Hydrogen value chain including reforming, liquefaction, transportation and fuelling stations
- Offshore and onshore pipelines
- Desalination, raw water, demineralized water and waste water treatment plants
- Familiarity with current process technologies and licensors associated with the above.
Specific skills & knowledge
Delivers process safety engineering major deliverables according to a set engineering design criteria utilizing approved engineering procedures and practices. Coordinate the design development of a system/project with other engineering departments. Coordinates engineering efforts in assigned areas between specialty and other engineering groups or disciplines, with the client, suppliers, and contractors and between other groups. Performs work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and/or difficult coordination requirements. Plans, coordinates or prepares equipment or work specifications, bid evaluations and award recommendations for equipment. When delegated, assumes a lead technical role over other engineers or project subgroups for completing specific tasks. Assists in on-the-job-training of assigned personnel and provides input for their performance evaluations. Prepares letters to vendors and clients. Reviews bid analyses and makes recommendation. Prepares or assists in preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports or proposals. Performs or assists in the performance of problem analysis and original design. Prepares and/or assists in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders. Reviews and checks work of subordinate engineers.
