Sanlam Group Technology is responsible for the provision of a digitally enabled technology service as a group COE, drive business and transformation and provide group-wide digital and data architecture. We operate the various technology platforms and shared services, ensure Cyber and Information Security resilience, and act as technology governance and risk orchestrator for technology across Sanlam.
The Database Administrator’s role is to design, support, monitor, maintain, and performance tune production databases while ensuring high levels of data availability. This individual is also responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing database policies and procedures to ensure the integrity, availability, and recoverability of databases and their accompanying software. Perform general Oracle database administration tasks on Oracle 19C installations for Sanlam’s centrally hosted Oracle solutions for African countries, as well as support of in-country hosted implementations. Oracle is deployed on both Linux and Windows. This position includes both system - and application database support tasks. The client which will be supported is Sanlam Allianz.
What will make you successful in this role?
- Assess and develop long-term strategic goals for production databases in conjunction with data owners and department managers
- Work with application development staff to develop database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance policies and procedures
- Design and implement redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery and data archiving to ensure effective protection and integrity of data assets
Specific daily tasks will include, but are not limited to:
- General Oracle multi-tenant and schema administration tasks, management and maintenance.
- Starting up and shutting down databases routines as part of the OS patching routines.
- Oracle Patching routines – N-1 requirement in line with application certification.
- Database logical and physical storage structure changes and maintenance.
- Oracle user access control and review.
- Create, deploy and review DDL and DML to manage user data and schema objects.
- Database backup and recovery process implementation and monitoring.
- Database health monitoring and reporting issues to senior DBA, as well as actively take part in preventive or corrective actions.
- Implement and review DR capability and participate in twice annual Sanlam DR exercises.
- DBMS performance troubleshooting, monitoring user activity and trace application session activity.
Qualifications and Experience
Qualifications:
- Matric
- Degree or Diploma in the field of computer science and/or 2 years equivalent work experience
Knowledge & Experience:
- DBMS Backups
- Perform database backups (Hot/Cold Backups) using RMAN.
- Perform schema-based backups using export and import utilities.
- TDE – Wallet encryption for file encryption
- Database Security
- Implement and maintain Oracle database user roles and privileges for adherence to Sanlam data access- and data security policies
- Disaster Recovery
- Understand disaster recovery principles and take part in DR exercises
- Linux and MS OS Proficiency
- Working knowledge of the underlying Linux and Microsoft OS to perform basic Oracle DBMS tasks.
- Sound knowledge of OS level DBMS utilities (IMPDB, EXPDB, RMAN etc)
- PL/SQL & SQL – DDL and DML
- DDL creation for database object manipulation using basic SQL, PL/SQL scripts SQL procedures (All database schema objects - tables, indexes, views, database link, PL/SQL procedures and triggers)
- Database maintenance job creation, scheduling and monitoring.
- Management Tool Knowledge
- Sound working knowledge of Toad / SQLDeveloper for daily task management
- Good working knowledge of OEM Cloud Control will be advantageous
- Cloud knowledge and skills are advantageous

- Working knowledge of Oracle DBMS, Sound working knowledge of the operating system Oracle server resides on and usage of underlying infrastructure
- Knowledge of general database concepts
- Understanding up to Oracle DMBS v19C
- Working knowledge and understanding of Oracle DMBS v19C
- Working knowledge and sound understanding of all available products, services and resources in the Oracle DMBS v19C Server suite of products
- Knowledge to advise and execute on integration to the Oracle environment including ODBC, JDBC, ODBO and other Oracle supported connectors
- Knowledge of the Oracle manager to monitor database performance and troubleshooting
