As our YDE South Africa expansion journey continues, we have an array of exciting future opportunities available in 2024. In particular, we are seeking talented Senior Design Engineers (with good PVSyst, SLD, AutoCAD and SketchUp experience) eager to advance their careers to the next level within the renewable energy development space with us!
A Senior Design Engineer ’s job is mainly to design and develop site plans for solar panel installation by incorporating the contract specifications, client requirements and government regulations without compromising the constructability of these designs.
The Senior Design Engineer takes the initial system concept ideas and translates them into fully detailed construction-ready designs. Coordinating with multiple team members and customers, the Design Engineer balances the necessity of a customer solution with the efficiency of standard practices.
Key Result Areas and Responsibilities
- KRA 1: Full Understanding of Local Electrical Regulations
Complete understanding of the Electrical Networks, Grid Code, Earthing Systems, and integration of PV systems with the local grid, manage grid connection applications and agreements.
Complete understanding of the local and international standards (IEC, BS, IEEE, NRS, SANS etc.) applicable to design of the on and off-grid PV systems. - KRA 2: Prepare initial drawings at proposal stage.
Perform site visits and if necessary, measure sites where the drawings are not available.
Perform desktop analysis and prepare site layouts and energy yield assessments for remote sites.
Analyze the technical information, including RFP and tenders, and generate the required compiled documents, considering creative and advanced solutions that would reduce cost and time.
Prepare bill of quantities for specific projects, for the electrical infrastructures.
Generate PV layouts on AutoCAD, Helioscope, PV Case, Helios 3D or other similar software.
Generate electrical schematics such as SLDs (Single Line Diagrams) aligned with the standards set by YDE and International standards.
Perform energy yield assessments using simulation software such as PVSYST, following the rules and guidelines defined by the VP Technical Design. - KRA 3: Prepare detailed drawings at project stage.
Work with the central engineering team to produce detailed engineering drawings, technical descriptions, electrical calculations for the engineering signoffs, construction drawings, drawings for projects licensing, EPC, and execution.
Analyze the information or inputs given by the power systems team or the Grid operator, regarding Grid Code requirements, PoCC specifications and limitations, Grid support, and design the PV Plants according to that and in full compliance with it.
Keep up with the procurement team to share the project requirements and align the project design accordingly.
Complete interconnection drawings, single line diagrams, bid sets, construction sets, and as-built drawings in addition to coordinating overflow of engineering with engineering vendors as needed for all solar and battery energy storage projects.
Coordinate with clients, consultants, and authorities to ensure the quick approval of drawings compliant with the job requirements and contract.
Follow up the preparation of drawing’s submittal log in line with the overall project schedule in coordination with internal stakeholders. - KRA 4: Perform compliance and quality control.
Have experience of PV systems performance analysis and detailed operational assessment, Knowledge on performing probability analysis and uncertainties calculations on PV system’s estimated energy.
Maintain permanent contact with suppliers for technical discussion on project solutions, alternative solutions, and optimization of the electrical infrastructures.
Ensure that the drawings are done in accordance with the company approved local and international standards, symbols, and methodology.
Be familiar and comply with local authority requirements and regulations with local grid operators in respective YDE markets.
Review the design shared by the contractors/subcontractors and check the compliance with YDE regulations, local grid requirements, international standards, and good engineering practices.
