WSP has an exciting new opportunity for a Process / Chemical Design Engineer to join the Water Treatment Process Engineering Division within the Mine Engineering team on a full-time basis in Waterfall City, South Africa. This is a senior level position in the consulting team and the incumbent will be responsible for design, drawing and construction monitoring of water treatment related projects predominantly in the mining and industrial sectors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake the lead engineer role to execute engineering projects by delivering on technical studies through the application of process engineering and design principles.
- Support the group in executing water treatment projects including:
- Site investigation participation
- Active and passive water treatment technology applications
- Closure water treatment costing development
- Development of closure water treatment roadmaps
- Water savings opportunity identification and development
- Tender documentation development and adjudication assistance
- Identification of key technical risks in process design, and proposal of solutions to mitigate or eliminate these risks.
- Plan, organise and execute engineering design work in accordance with the required governance processes.
- Provide supervision of construction and commissioning activities as required and as directed by the engineering lead.
- Manage multi-discipline interactions and network with licensors and vendors if and when required.
- Prepare and/or provide input into cost estimates.
- Ensure all technical documentation, designs and drawings are reviewed, signed-off, properly documented and catalogued.
- Attend site and other meetings, to action deliverables timeously and effectively.
- Achieve financial productivity on all projects.
- Implement effective systems for good record keeping – designs, files, reports, drawings, etc.
- Network and liaise with other staff working on projects at all levels as well as colleagues from other business units.
- Provide technical analysis and monitoring expertise on issues to clients (external & internal) on projects within the water industry and liaising with WSP’s advanced testing laboratory.
- Assist with contract administration including preparation of certificates and “as built” drawings, construction dates etc.
- Ensure suitability of technical proposals, preparing proposals and reports for clients and building business relationships with clients.
- Compile letters, reports and prepare tender documentation for approval by the Project Leader.
- Compliance with WSP’s Quality Management System.
- The incumbent must be able to undertake and review associated works, designs and demonstrate a sound technical knowledge of contract and construction procedures.
- The position is head office based, however the successful candidate must be prepared and free to travel extensively both within South Africa and within the African Continent to manage projects and engage in client and other meetings.
- Provide safety leadership in health & safety (HSSE incident reporting).
- Participate in training activities, mentoring and transferring knowledge to junior engineers.
- Plan, develop schedules, coordinate and oversee manpower on important engineering projects to meet completion deadlines.
- Supervise, coordinate and review/evaluate activities carried out by junior engineers.

Minimum Requirements:
- Relevant degree (BEng or BSc) in Chemical Engineering.
- 10-15 years plus experience post graduation with developed specialist skills in the area of water treatment and process design.
- Familiarity with water treatment technologies such as RO, UF etc is essential.
- Postgraduate degree (BEng or BSc) in Water Utilisation Engineering will be advantageous.
- Professional registration at Engineering Council of South Africa.
- Proficient in engineering software such as Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Plus, Biowin, WAVE etc.
- Proficiency in other engineering related software will be considered beneficial.
