Toolroom Designer
As a Tool Designer, your primary responsibility will be managing NPI Tooling and Product CAD to ensure consistent and precise tool designs. You will apply your expertise to create and review cost-effective tool designs in collaboration with internal and external toolmakers. Additionally, you will maintain and manage the existing customer CAD databases. We are open to candidates with a background in product design who are eager to develop skills in Mould Tool Design, with on-the-job mentoring available.
Toolroom Designer Key Responsibilities:
- Proficient use of SolidWorks for designing injection mould tools, with familiarity in AutoCAD Lite. Experience with VisiCAD is a plus, but not required.
- Strong plastic product design skills in SolidWorks and knowledge of CAD file management systems.
- Familiarity with ordering and specifying standard tool steel sets from UK and international suppliers.
- Apply knowledge of steel hardness and mechanical strength to maximize tool longevity and reduce service intervals.
- Understand and design mould tool ancillaries, such as latches, rack & pinions, water couplings, nipples, baffles, safety switches, and hot runner systems.
- Competent in selecting and specifying Hot Runner Systems.
- Actively participate in DFM reviews, contributing to tool and product design improvements.
- Ability to interpret 2D drawings and create 3D models from them, and vice versa.
- Design and incorporate common bolsters for family tools to deliver value for customers.
- Conduct compatibility studies to ensure new tool designs are suitable for injection moulding machines and platen sizes.
- Apply established plastic material shrinkage rates to tool design.
- Knowledge of engineering plastic materials and converting processes is beneficial.
- Support NPI and Operations teams with customer design evaluations, using PowerPoint presentations to communicate key points.
- Work closely with the Toolroom Manager, Toolmakers, Moulding Departments, and Technical Teams to ensure seamless collaboration.
Toolroom Designer's Education/Qualifications:
- HNC in Engineering or equivalent qualification.
- GCSE (or equivalent) including Maths & English or relevant vocational qualifications.
Toolroom Designer's Knowledge/Experience:
- Proven background in customer service and focus.
- Accurate data entry skills.
- Experience working with various departments involved in manufacturing processes.
Toolroom Designer's Skills/Abilities:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Confident and positive phone manner, especially when responding to international inquiries.
- Excellent organisational skills with keen attention to detail.
- Problem-solving skills with a customer-focused approach.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and computer literacy.
