Your opportunity:
Reporting to the Associate Director, Undergraduate Academic Services, the Undergraduate Pedagogical Support Specialist will be a key contributor in providing expanded teaching support to a larger number of instructors and TAs across undergraduate courses in the Department of Computer Science. Duties include internal communications about teaching; providing pedagogical consultation; support teaching and TA awards and grant applications; providing framework for course administration support and teaching support services; and supporting teaching projects and initiatives within the department. The additional support provided by the new role will be critical in supporting a larger number of instructors and TAs.
This position will supervise a team of instructional support staff to support the department’s goal of delivering high-quality education and leadership across the university in innovations in teaching and learning.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing instructional design plans for use in teaching contexts involving educational technologies
- Advising instructors on strategies for developing and delivering curriculum
- Analyzing needs and recommending appropriate technologies for teaching/learning goals
- Advising on best practices and strategies for effective course design
- Assessing and recommending candidates for internal and external teaching awards
- Leading seminars and/or workshops and providing orientation to new employees and/or students
- Planning and estimating financial resources required for programs and/or projects
- Directing the activities of a group of staff-appointed employees all performing a similar function
Essential Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Education or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
- Minimum five years in pedagogy in higher education, including experience in program and/or course planning, facilitation, consultation, curriculum development, and faculty development.
- Applied knowledge of educational tools and course delivery, demonstrated expertise in educational pedagogy, including experience in pedagogical principles, delivery and evaluation of learning.
- Experience delivering support for the use of technology in an educational setting.
- Demonstrated experience identifying needs, analyzing data, interpreting findings, and making recommendations for teaching and learning goals.
- Experience conducting research in higher education (e.g. relating to pedagogical strategies, curriculum development and higher education institutional policy and procedures).
- Experience developing and delivering presentations, workshops, and/or training sessions, as well as developing accompanying training and resource materials.
- Experience supporting teaching award applications.
- Experience supervising staff, preferably in a unionized environment.
- Demonstrated experience with Office 365, and expert proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Advanced proficiency in the use of learning management systems (preferably Quercus), online learning software packages and other related educational technologies.
- Strong customer-service orientation and ability to successfully work and communicate with clients with varying degrees of technical proficiency.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and presentation/facilitation skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines and successfully work under pressure and with competing priorities.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with ability to act with initiative, tact, and diplomacy.
- Excellent collaboration skills with the ability to work well under pressure, both individually and as a team member.
Assets (Nonessential):
- University-level teaching experience in computer science.
