Duties & Responsibilities
The North-West University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the following position, which forms part of the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). Preference will be given to applications from black (African, Coloured and Indian), female and disabled candidates. Applicants must be SA citizens and 40 years or younger of age. The nGAP aims to improve the academic staffing capacity of South African universities and address the under-representation of designated groups in the academic sector.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The nGAP position in the School of Economic Sciences is part of the SSAUF initiative by the DHET to improve academic staffing. nGAP employees will participate in a six-year developmental programme on a permanent full-time basis under the University's normal conditions of service and will work under the supervision of an appointed mentor.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching and Learning:
- Conduct tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions, and studio sessions.
- Initiate and develop subject material.
Development and Supervision:
- Prepare and deliver lectures and seminars.
- Supervise the programme of study of honours or postgraduate students.
Research and Innovation:
- Supervise major honours or postgraduate research projects.
- Conduct research and be involved in professional activity.
- Start/continue with own PhD.
Development of Course:
- Develop course material with support from senior employees.
- Marking and assessment.
- Consultation with students.
Desired Experience & Qualification
- Master’s degree in Macro-Economics / International Trade (NQF level 9).
- The Master's degree must be achieved with an average of 70% or above. Please attach proof of results in your application.
- Applicants must be SA citizens and 40 years or younger of age.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
KEY FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:
- Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), email, and internet.
- Knowledge of appropriate assessment theory and practice.
- Commitment to teaching and learning, including involvement in students’ educational development.
- Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g., whiteboard technology, eFundi) to enhance learning.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- Good interpersonal relations and client-service orientation.
- Language proficiency to function in multilingual environments.
- Ability to function well individually and as part of a team.
- Adaptability and good analytical abilities.
- Problem-solving skills and good planning/organising skills.
REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
