Purpose of Role
The Smelter Production Coordinator carries out accountability and responsibility for the safe achievement of metallurgical targets in his/her section. The incumbent will lead and control all activities of staff in his/her section. The position often takes on the role of coach and instructor to explain how the work should be performed.
Role Context
- Adherence to the shift production plan
- Coordinates services to operate the equipment in the plant
- Coordination of process equipment maintenance
- Process control within defined smelter parameters and recipe
- Ensure adherence to all safety (i.e. create awareness of hazards and behaviour)
- Coach and instruct to explain how the work should be performed, focusing on improving, changing and optimizing practices
- Implement corrective action in cases of non-compliance to objectives and safety standards
- Liaise with the Weighbridge and/or Stock Controller in order to ensure the dispatch of products timeously
- Record and analyse production stoppages and equipment breakdowns in order to take corrective action to improve section availability
- Primary focus is on effective and safe operation of the section to optimize efficiencies and recoveries and maintain quality of produced products
- Effective operation of the section process to agreed process parameters to achieve hourly and shift targets
- Creating high performing team and conducive employee relations climate in the team
- Administration of necessary systems (Job cards, risk assessments, permits); Coaching and mentoring
- In a planned inspection schedule for critical equipment in the plant in order to ensure preventative action is taken before equipment failure occurs
- Work closely with the maintenance department in order to ensure a world class maintenance culture is established and maintained on the plant
- Communicate failures/breakdowns and deviations in process or equipment to team members (Process and Engineering)
- Supervise team and support services during breakdowns in order to limit downtime while ensuring adherence to safety standards
- Ensure equipment inspections and section inspections are completed at the start of every shift

Qualifications
- Grade 12/ NQF Level 4 (N3)
Job Specific Experience
- Computer literate; MS Office
- Minimum 6 years’ experience as smelting furnace Operator: BOF/AC/DC furnaces
- Supervisor/ Team-leader experience in PGM / Chrome smelting Operation Advantageous
- Metal Convertor and Induction furnace experience valuable
- Valid Driver’s license
