The Orthopedic Surgeon will work as part of the trauma team delivering trauma care as part of the multi-disciplinary clinical team. They have the additional responsibility for providing peri-operative, operative, and post-operative orthopedic management of patients presenting to the facility.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Perform triage of individual and multiple patients as needed.
- Manage all patients according to Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) or European Trauma Course (ETC) principles including but not limited to the use of tourniquets, pelvic binders, and chest drains.
- Perform a pre-operative documented surgical assessment including distal neurovascular status of limbs.
- Perform damage control orthopaedic surgery including but not limited to:
- Wound debridement of soft tissue and bone including amputation if indicated.
- Perform complete fasciotomy of limbs as needed.
- External Fixation of pelvis and long bones.
- Reduction of dislocated joints and stabilization of fractures with plaster.
- Advise on closed management of spinal injuries.
- Manage post-operative orthopedic care.
- Maintain a contemporaneous medical record.
- Stabilize and support a casualty before evacuation by air or land, in support of ER clinical team if required.
- Ensure best practice in line with clinical guidelines.
Qualifications
Qualifications & Experience:
- University Degree in Medicine with a minimum of 5 Years post-qualification experience.
- A specialist qualification and/or formal education program in Surgery.
